How to improve your Page Ranking

Improving your Google rankings and moving up in the search engines is part art, part science. There are many variables to moving up the Google ladder that have to do with the web-crawlers (spiders) that look for the freshest content and most relevant sites for search engine searchers. The techniques can be complicated and a full-blown professional SEO program requires much planning and man-hours.

However, there are a few things you can do to make your website optimized, and that will help your business rise to the top in targeted searches in your local region or within your company's industry-sending more qualified prospects to your site. Google employs a ranking system that rates a website from 0-10 depending on its traffic. Broad information-based sites will have higher rankings.

It's important to remember that if you have a small, local or narrow-niche business your goal should not be to have a high Google ranking. What's more important is that you drive more traffic of qualified prospects to your site.

7 Tips to Website Optimizing

1. Keyword Research: Use a site like (KeywordTracker) which will tell you how many people search for a keyword every day. Then do a Google search for that keyword or phrase to see how many results appear. The more competitive the keyword, the more difficult it will be to rise in ranking. Sometimes a specific, targeted keyword is better.

2. Choosing your keywords: Pick one or two of the key phrases for which you'd like to be found for each page of your site. Pick one that's very specifically targeted to the product or service you sell, and pick one or two that are more general product or service terms. If you sell only locally, include your town, county or state as part of the keyword string. Remember that the search engines will recognize if you're using too many keywords (keyword density), so choose carefully.

3. On your website, you can use different keywords on each page, but keep the meta-title, meta-description and meta-keywords consistent on each. The search engine spiders want to see that you are who you say you are, so make sure to use those same keywords in your headline and then repeat them 2-or 3 more times within the rest of the copy on the page.

4. Many companies feel that once their site is live, it's done. However, the spiders always look for the most dynamic sites. Update the content on your website daily because freshest content will be searched for first. The best way to do that is to post a "news" section on your site that is informative to your prospects. If you're writing blogs, then this task should not be too difficult, because you can include the same blogs you're posting on other sites on your own "news" section of your website. Keep the news informational and of interest to your clientele.

5. Frequently post on blogs that are related to your industry, product or service and would be of interest to your customers. Be careful not to post "spammy" comments. The important thing is to provide information that your customers need and to show your expertise on the subject. Remember that these sites are usually topic-specific, and attract engaged audiences on those subjects, so the members will be actively interested in the subject matter. Post links back to the news information part of your site so they can go there for more information.

6. Post comments with links to your site on other people's blog postings. There are plenty of blogs about all types of business and consumer products and services. Join them and become an active member by giving advice and adding to other blog posts. Make sure you are not just promoting your business but leaving expert commentary and continuing the conversation.

7. Create a Directory Program where you list your company's contact information and description on a certain number of directory sites a week. Start with the classified sites and then move to sites specific to your industry, your local area, then move on broader sector and business directories, and then to the more generic directories.

8. Allow reciprocal links from your website to the directories you've listed on. They don't have to have a huge presence on your site, but it helps to move your company up in their directory. The websites that search engines feel will be most legitimate are sites that end in .org and .edu.

Following these just few examples will help move you to the top of the most targeted searches for your service.
