Meet the OreObject Sphere Touch Mouse!!!!
We got this badboy sent to our office in the last few days, we were given the really snazzy platinum models, but it does also come in steel and titanium.. Not solid of course, but in nice plated versions. This device is absolutely beautiful, amazxing finish, however it's not cheap, the version they sent to us can fetch up to $220. And the price isn't coming down any time soon.
Unboxing the device, the packaging is prett y impressive, very carefully designed and looks similar to an expensive purfume box, and in similar pinache to the iphone packaging. Comes complete in a really nice fitted foam packgaing inside and comes with sleek looking punches and things.. Not sure why though, since when was the last time you needed a pouch to carry your mouse.. However I guess if you're going to drop $220 on a mouse, you'd better make sure it stays pristine as much as possible.. heh
We'll get to the mouse in a second, but let me start off by saying that the cord is nylon and not rubber, and has a pretty neat effect. Almost looks like snakeskin, and the USB connector is sexy to say the least. Has a solver chrome effect.
Now I like the USB connecter but the cable is left much to be desired, the cable will get dirty! and secondly the cable seems to get in the way all the time, there's something about rubber cabelling which makes it stay put however way you arrnage it, but the nylon cabelling just seems to have a mind of it's own.
Now, let's talk about the mouse itself
click mode
The mouse has a click mode and touch mode, the click mode is similar to your conventioanl mosue, you press the button down a couple of mm's and it makes a cick sound and commands the computer accordingly, however the touch mode is very different, the touch mode is a bit like press the icons on your iphone. It takes a while to get used to but it's worth it eventually.
ceramic feet
I really dig the ceramic feet on the mouse, it's really nicely done and is a step away from the rubber/plastic feet on conventional mice, the ceramic glides effortless, so much so, that you don't need a mouspad. In fact I would say a mousepad will hinder the sphere touch, and definately won't make it look classy ;)
Power
The sphere touch is laser powered which makes it very accurate, more so than optical mice, and is USB powered, I like this, I've had wireless battery powered mice before and they sucked so much, because they would lag, and this was noticably when playing video games.
Which briongs me to my next point, I will be reviewing the iphone backup battery pack on my next review.
sphere shape
I don't really have a lot to say about the sphere (ball) shape of the mouse, I'm too used to the flat/low profile ergonomic shape of my normal mice, and I'm not sure if using this for long periods of time is practical.
spinning disc scrolloer
by far the most discenring quality of this mouse is the spinning top scroller, rather than a scroll wheel mouse, oreobject has resorted to a spinning disc, that works similiarly to the ipod.
This is blatently inspired by the ipod, and I'm not really sure how well it will trasfer.
All in all sphere touch is a very nice classy looking device, and is recommened for people who really like shiny things, have more money than sense, or just want a nice eye candy to use with their over expensive imac
