Natural Pest Control Using Organic and Safe Products and Nemetodes

The days of using dangerous chemicals to get rid of house and garden insects are over.

With all of us being concerned with how these chemicals affect our families, pets and the earth for future generations it's time to get to know organic, safe means of getting greener lawns, keeping away mosquitoes and plant damaging insects.

If your looking for a gentler, family friendly way to control home, garden and pet areas you've found the right spot.

With the 2011 - 2012 winter being much warmer than normal it is expected to be a very warm spring which will allow more weeds, stagnant nooks and crannies and under brush to accumulate than normal which will be perfect places to harbor unwanted pests.

The expectations have come true & the mosquito & pest population is very active now and will continue to be until the colder weather returns.

Landscaping Pick Me Up

Here is a great recipe for everything in your yard - grass, trees, bushes, all plants. It will help keep them healthy and happy.

In a 20 gallon hose end sprayer mix 1 can of beer, 1/2 cup molasses , 1 cup ammonia, 1/2 cup liquid dish soap and 1/2 liquid lawn food or fertilizer.

The beer will help to de-thatch, the molasses will attract smaller non-annoying insects which will help to aerate your lawn, the ammonia and dish soap will help to clean off pollution so that your landscaping plants can breathe and accept the fertilizer more easily.

I use this mix every 3 weeks or so, about a day or two after the lawn has been mowed so that it has a full few days to really sink in.

It may sound like an unusual mix of items, but it really does work.

Live Ladybugs

Beneficial Nematodes That Help Rid Your Garden of Aphids and Other Annoying and Destructive Pests

Is your lawn and garden over run with aphids but you don't want to spray and use harmful chemicals which can harm your children, pets, guests and environment - then adding live ladybugs to your garden is the safe and inexpensive way.

When your live ladybugs arrive you release them at sundown and your ladybugs go to work munching away on aphids ( each ladybug can eat up to 50 aphids a day) plus they also like leaf hoppers, mealy bugs and other common destructive pests in your yard.

In addition to being a good addition to your yard, they are also fun to watch, and as we all know from our youth ladybugs are gentle creatures that children love to hold and watch.

Even if your yard isn't overrun with pests you may want to pick up some ladybugs just to have your children and grand children learn about nature.

In addition to ladybugs you'll find many different types of beneficial nematodes at Beneficial NematodesBeneficial Nematodes, live ladybugs, praying mantis

Organic & Natural Pet Care and Natural Pet Remedies

While we may choose natural products for ourselves, we often overlook this step when shopping our family pets.

In addition to pets having the same reactions to harmful chemicals that we have, many of us have children who love to roll around and hugs their pet and this will spread the harmful chemicals to our children.

Then if your family is anything like mine, our dogs sleep on the furniture and in the winter often sleep in our bed with us.
Just think about what is rubbing off on your furniture and then on to your family.

So before you pick up that pet or lawn care product be sure to read the ingredients. If you don't want them on you & your family then it's best it keep it away from your pets also.

Keep Your Lawn Aerated Naturally

One way to be able to use less water on your lawn is to keep it aerated and the soil non-compacted.

If you spray your lawn once a month with 1 cup of liquid dish soap that has been put into a 20 gallon hose end sprayer (fill the rest of the sprayer with warm water). It will help to keep the soil open and airy.

You may have tried natural lawn care products in the past with less than desirable results.

What Does The Word Organic Mean?

The word 'organic' can be seen on the packaging on all types of products. You also hear it on the news and it is talked about in forums across the internet. But how many people actually know that the term organic means?

The Meriam Webster Dictionary Definition Of Organic
The Meriam Webster online dictionary has a longer explanation of the term "organic" and to see the full definition just visit http://www.merriam-webster.com/ and use the search function or if you would like to jump to the organic specific page just visit http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/organic?show=0&t=1301491163
So anyway the shorter version is "...use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides..."

So In Simpler Terms
Basically, when the term organic is referred to when speaking about food crops it means that no harsh chemicals can be used on the plants including fertilizer, soil, water or other product to produce a higher crop yield or to keep pests and bugs away.

Then when you speak about meat you also have to add the the animals feed or the animals themselves cannot have been exposed to antibiotics, stimulants or had any feed which has been exposed any of the ingredients as mentioned in the above paragraph about crops.
When speaking about animals the term organic has nothing to do with the way the animal is treated ( such as penned compared to free range) that is a totally different subject matter.

How Does a Product Get To Use The Label Organic

The USDA is the department that is involved with the labeling regulations ( or allowing the use of the term )of the term organic.
There are 3 different level of organic products and these levels are:

1) Products made completely 100% from organic ingredients and methods may be labeled "100% organic" and display the USDA seal stating this.
2) Products with a minimum of 95% organic ingredients can use the label "organic" and display the seal.
3) Products with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients can be labeled "made with organic ingredients".

(Full information can be found on the USDA website. http://usda.gov )

The above regulations are for US products only. Each country has it own rules and regulations, so if you are living in a country other than the US, you may want to view out your country's view on the term organic,

How You May Be Mislead

Some manufacturers may insinuate, but not openly advertise that organic means that the products are locally grown or that they have a higher nutritional value. Although it may be true, those statements are not to be automatically assumed.
Just as the word "healthy" is not regulated neither is "natural", so while you now know what organic means and that the term is regulated other wording on the package many or may not be regulated.

So be sure to be an informed consumer, keep up on the latest trends and terms in product packaging and try to make the most informed decisions for your family.

Beneficial Insects and Organisms

Using beneficial insects is mother natures way of taking care of pests. Full instructions are included and as you already know, all beneficial insects do not harm people, plants or pets.

My favorite are Lady Beetles ( most of us usually call them lady bugs) and they are also very easy to care for. Just release them and they will stay in your garden eating away at all the insects that can harm your plants.

    Liked it, very informative!
I think organic pest control is the best solution because that way you won't have pesticides ending up in the food cycle or harming your kids and pets. I always use natural traps and try to prevent insects from coming into my home in the first place :)
