Organic Skin Care and CosmeticsConcerns are growing over the possible health effects of a common ingredient in many cosmetics and personal care products. I am one of those people that have never bothered to check the labels on the skin care products I put on my skin. Even though I have suffered from breakouts and reactions for years, I contributed this to having "sensitive skin". My rude awakening came when I gave birth and my baby's skin started to suffer the same fate as mine. Well, I knew then that something wasn't right and I could no longer hide my head under the "sensitive skin" label. I began to take a closer look at what I was feeding my skin and started looking at alternative organic skin care products, organic cosmetics and organic health products.
My shocking discovery was that chemicals are in everything and we are smack in this chemical broth. Chemicals are added to our water, food, cleaning supplies and yes, our skin care products, despite the fact that most of these chemicals are not tested for safety. What do we know about the chemical parabens? Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. It is used as preservatives in various formulas combined with its low cost, is attractive to manufacturers. This chemical can be found in harmless looking products such as soaps, shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives. How about the dyes in clothes such as those cute tshirts that we love? Yes, our clothing are part of this mix.
A controversial study reports that parabens were found in samples of breast cancer. Although the findings were inconclusive, scientists have urged the review of the use of parabens. Philippa Darbre, a researcher from the University of Reading in England said, "this demonstrates that parabens do indeed penetrate the human skin from cosmetic products". It is also believed that parabens in underarm deoderant and other cosmetics get into breast tissue and contribute to the development of tumors. We should be concerned because parabens mimic the hormone estrogen. A Danish study found that when a paraben cream was spread on the backs of healthy men, the substance showed up in their blood samples in mere hours. It is difficult to ascertain the number of chemicals we are exposed to everyday.
We should only use products that are made without the use of toxic chemicals. The world's first certified organic skin care products are made of pure and completely free of impurities and synthetics. Your skin will love you!
