Lovely place. Sold me on the coffee shop :)
  • It's St Mary Cray with NO 's'! Apr 21, 2012 @ 10:35 am | delete
You say that you live in Orpington and that your mother was born there, but you have made a common error most becoming of idiots who live outside of the area by referring to St Mary Cray as St Mary Crays. That is unforgiveable!
  • NanLT Apr 21, 2012 @ 11:52 am | delete
Thank you for pointing out the errors I had made. I actually found St Mary Cray written 3 different ways when I looked to see what you were referring to and I have corrected each.

I am indeed from outside of this area originally, having only lived here since 1998. However, my mother wasn't born here, my husband was. I am sure that if I had asked him to proofread this article he would have pointed out the mistake. I do hope I can be forgiven now.

Thanks for your interesting summary of Orpington and its history. However, you have one fundamental thing wrong. The London Government Act 1963 (enacted on 1 April 1965) made Orpington part of London (previously it was part of Kent). People in Orpington cannot vote in Kent County Council elections, and we pay council tax to the London Borough of Bromley. Royal Mail does not specify Kent in addresses - in fact it doesn't require a county in an address, and their website confirms addresses as 123 Any Street, Orpington, BR...(postcode)
  • NanLT Apr 21, 2012 @ 11:50 am | delete
Thank you Mr Pedantic for your most pedantic comments. Yes, you are correct in that Orpington is now part of London, specifically the London Borough of Bromley. However, most residents continue to write Kent as part of the postal address and when post comes through the door 9 times out of 10 it will have Kent as part of the address line.

Counties aren't required in any address. Theoretically, I could write on an envelope and the Royal Mail would be able to deliver it.
  • NanLT Apr 21, 2012 @ 12:03 pm | delete
and I really need to figure out how to use the formatting better. I could write (house number) + (post code) and Royal Mail would be able to deliver it.

I grew up in St Pauls Cray,Orpington & went to Leesons Hill primary school. I have fond memories of walking to the Priory with friends during the summer to picnic . I had no idea that Orpington was part of the London borough of Bromley untill today however & always thought it part of the county of Kent...seems it is a bit of both!
  • NanLT Mar 26, 2011 @ 8:17 am | delete
It is a bit of both. The postal address says Kent, and Orpington was in Kent County up until about the mid-60s when the London Borough of Bromley was created.

Very interesting Read. I live in Abbey Wood, London but have never been to Orpington. I'm glad I read this. I hope someday you get to meet the famous people who were born there.

What a delightful town. When I visited England, I was amazed at the age of the towns there and the history on almost every street corner.
