What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease that results in the loss of bone density, or the thinning of bones. Though it happens to both men and women, women are more likely to suffer from it, and African-American women will suffer more than white women.

When one gets osteoporosis, it means their bones are more brittle, and thus easier to break or bend. If you've seen older women hunched over, it's almost always due to having some type of osteoporosis. Many fractured hips occur because of this also, but something most people don't know is that osteoporosis can affect things that have nothing to do with bones, such as early menopause. Also, this isn't something that only older women get; many younger women suffer some type of this disease as well.

What can I do to Prevent Osteoporosis?

How can I Deal with Osteoporosis?

There are some tips for dealing with osteoporosis. One is to exercise, mainly to try to build up the muscles around the bones for extra protection. It's recommended to do more strength training than cardio training to achieve this result.

Sufferers also need to start ingesting a lot of calcium. There are lots of calcium rich foods, including seafood, but things such as almonds, beans and many different fruits and vegetables contain calcium. A person might also have to start taking a lot of Vitamin D to help the body retain calcium if their body eliminates it as quickly as it's taken in.

Living a healthier life will help to keep osteoporosis from taking over the body for good. It might also help keep you away from medications that are coming out that will help strengthen bones, but have side effects you might not want to deal with.

How is Osteoporosis Developed?

Why does Osteoporosis Effect Some more than Others?

Hip Damage Caused from OsteoporosisThe reason is either the lack of calcium because not enough is being taken in by women or because their bodies are rejecting or ignoring the calcium they are taking in. The reason it affects more African-American women is because more of them are lactose intolerant, and thus they probably stopped drinking milk earlier and also avoided many diary products overall.

Nearly 44 million people have some form of low bone density in the United States. It's hard to diagnose osteoporosis because there are no early warning symptoms most of the time, so many people don't know they're suffering from it until it's too late to do anything substantial about it. However, one warning sign for women to pay attention to is if they start exhibiting signs of early menopause. It's misdiagnosed often, but it's important to ask your physician for a bone density test as a precaution.
