People have claimed for centuries to be able to communicate in many ways with the spirits of those passed. Usually only the highest and most capable of priests, priestesses, seers and Sharman's have such talents, however during the time of the Spiritualist Movement the general population became more interested in learning such abilities. Indeed, trying to communicate with the deceased became a daily occurrence in many households, and the seemingly 'in' thing to do.

With the popularity of spiritualism steadily increasing, so did the ways of communicating with eh spirits evolve. One of the earliest 'modern' interactive methods included the gathering of several people, known then as a 'home circle' - usually being made up of friends and family. These groups experimented with knocking and rapping types of communication methods; something along the lines of a spirit answering questions with one knock for yes and two knocks for no.

Knocking and rapping soon fell out of favour, mostly due to its very limited scope of communication. Table tilting, another popular 'communication' method soon followed suit, because like with knocking - an experienced medium was a necessity in the group to instigate the connection with the other realm. They were also needed to interpret any responses gathered for the group. This wasn't what many spiritualist group members wanted; they wanted the freedom to learn more from the spirit world where, how and as they wished.

The next popular form of spirit communication to surface, one that remains fairly popular in some schools today, was Automatic Writing. During a sitting with a medium using automatic writing it is said the spirits would enter the medium, controlling their hand and mind - spelling out messages for those present. Although obviously fraudulent mediums had been caught out while using this sometimes dubious method, messages were often eerily precise too. Even today as many questions remain about automatic writing as possible answers have been found.

The next step in spirit communication was the creation of the 'Planchette', basically the mother of the Ouija or Talking Board as we know it today. It is speculated from some quarters that French spiritualist M Planchette is the founder of the planchette, 'a small, heart shaped table with pencils attached to its legs.' It was supposedly controlled by spirits to write out their messages or symbols. Compared to more modern Ouija it seems awkward and cumbersome.

Talking to the Dead

You may not know it now but there could have been instances in your life when you actually talked to the dead and weren't just aware that they were already spirits who crossed over to our dimension to visit or to do unfinished business. Sometimes too, they appear as angels out of nowhere just at the exact moment that you were feeling desperate and you needed help out of your rut.

Think about it. Who was that stranger who seemed to have appeared from out of the blue just when you're just about ready to give up to help you change a flat tire in the middle of the road when no one has been stopping in the last hour?

Keeping an Open Mind

I think that one of the things that keep us from understanding the paranormal is that we are overcome by our fears of the unknown when in reality, there really isn't anything to be scared about if only we try to understand the dynamics of this crossing of dimensions and meeting of our worlds.

While there have been many an instance where ghosts, spirits or simply, the dead have scared us out of our wits when we encounter them, it is more because of the images we have placed in our heads about them. Paranormal experts advise that when we encounter such entities, we should say a little prayer for them to help them move on.

If we are brave enough, we should even ask them what it is they need from us because they could be seeking help in fulfilling their unfinished business.

Deadly Encounters

When you feel the hairs on your neck raise for no visible reason, or you suddenly get goosebumps it could be because a spirit of the dead has crossed your path. If the goosebump lingers and you can't seem to shake it off after ignoring it as best you could, it is more than likely that the spirit is standing close by perhaps watching what you're doing or simply lingering about.

When this happens try to talk to the spirit and tell it not to scare you. Believe it or not, they do listen and they do understand where you're coming from as much as they hope you'd understand too, where they are coming from.

Before you know it, you could already be having a conversation with someone you don't see but you definitely know it's there.
