Often spelled Oushak, Ushak, and Uschak, Oushak carpets are the preeminent formal rug from the Ottoman Empire. Mamaluke or Para- Mamaluke can be exceptional and Bursa produced some great rugs but no where in the Ottoman empire produced so many great carpets over such a length of time. Antique Oushak rugs are among the most admired of all Turkish rugs. Oushak is about 100 miles south of Istanbul. The weaving tradition in Oushak may predate the 15th century but I believe that the real explosion of carpets occurred with the importation of Tabriz weaving masters in the first quarter of the 15th century. Since that time the weaving of rugs and carpets continues to this day. Oushak Rugs normally use very silky wool. It is not unusual to see a blend of goat wool as well.
