Camping Supplies - Expert Moms on Outdoor Cooking and Safety

Chefs and cooks may have undergone rigorous culinary trainings and have studied and mastered the art of cooking. But when it comes to home cooking, a lot of us believe in the old adage that "mothers still know best." It's not any different with outdoor cooking during camping trips and vacations.

Cooking Outdoors is Proper Planning

Since camp cooking and safety are two of the most important aspects of any camping vacation, a field that mothers have notable expertise on, we have gathered different tips and insights on how to ensure outdoor cooking efficiency and food safety.

Lisa Davis, 42, a mother of two boys, shared that one of the key ingredients in outdoor cooking is proper planning. "First, you have to write down a menu. In making your menu, make sure you only opt for simple meals that take a short time to prepare and cook. Also, you need to take into account any food allergies that your kids may have so you don't end up including ingredients that your kids are allergic to," Davis said.

Also another veteran outdoor cook and a mother of three children, Roseanne Olson, 46, reveal her secrets on how to keep kids away from the camp kitchen, "I never forget to bring toys and munchies to keep my kids busy while I cook. Otherwise, they'll be all around me, trying to play with kitchen utensils and going near the stove. At their age, it's not yet safe for them to hang around the cooking area with all the hot pots and sharp knives around."

For another expert mom, Sherina Hines, 38, it's all about educating her two girls about the food and cooking safety. "I've taught them almost everything there is to know about food and cooking safety. They stay away from the stove, they help cover up food on the table, they know it's not okay to eat left over food and they know about the stop, drop and roll method of putting out fire in clothing."

These mothers also share how important it is to set up a proper location for your cooking area. They advise to put your camp kitchen as far away from the sleeping area as possible. Some of their other tips include storing flammable liquids in metal safety containers, never to use gas to build fire, and to soak coals after cooking to prevent re-ignition.

According to Davis, camping supplies also play an important role in keeping food safe. Coolers keep frozen meat fresh, pots and pans must have lids to prevent unwanted insects to land on your food, and a portable stove which you use to cook food can kill any bacteria in it.

Most Important Rules on Food Safety

Hand washing, these three moms agree, is also one of the most important rules in food safety. "Wash your hands before and after handling food especially raw meat, before and after using the bathroom and after doing just about anything," Hines said.

"I always have disposable wipes handy so if it's not possible to wash your hands like if you've gone hiking, you can still keep your hands clean and free from bacteria," Olson said.

We cannot live in a germ-free environment. But with the helpful tips from these expert moms, we can have a safe and enjoyable food feast outdoors.

Ah, the great outdoors! Nothing would be better to wash away a long working week's stress than taking in a lungful of the woods' unsullied breath.
