RJ has bought himself a week to save his skin, wandering aimlessley he discovers a new suburban housing area and see's his survival plan mapping out, to add to his delight he also comes across a group of woodland animals, just awoken from hibernation and confused by the new 'thing' which surrounds them, scared and frightened as they dont know what it could be, they could call it Steve - who knows....

The woodland animals, a mashed up 'family' of different creatures, are led by Verne, who is a turtle, the family includes Stella, the skunk, opossum Ozzie, who is the father to Heather, Hammy, an overactive squirrel and a family of porcupines, Lou and Penny and their children Spike, Bucky, and Quillo.

Verne inadvertently ends up in the middle of the new found 'Steve' and gently steps through and asks himself 'where am I', he has found an all new territory and has lots of very close shaves on his visit - over the hedge

He makes a flying return back through to his family where Verne declares, half the forest has gone !

RJ finds this the perfect opportunity to jump in and introduce himself, telling the group that they have been surrounded by a hedge and are now a litty bitty speck in the middle of 54 acres of manmade, manicured airconditioned paradise. The animals, still scared listen to RJ trying to persuade them that the new surburbia, over the hedge, is the answer to all their dreams.

From the very start Verne is wary of RJ and tries to warn the family that the new suburbia is not safe, which he knows of from first hand experience but the group side with RJ and discover that human food is simply delicious. The woodland family make numerous trips over the hedge and into their new found paradise, raiding food which they never knew existed never mind tasted so good.

Un-be-known to the group though RJ only has one plan for all the food - to repay Vincent. One householder however notices that food is going astray, Gladys Sharp, the development homeowner association president, decides to call in Dwayne LaFontant, 'The Verminator', a local pest control specialist who Gladys employs to install an over the top pest exterminator system in her garden to get rid of the woodland family once and for all.

Despite a few near misses with 'the verminator' the animals continue to enjoy their trips over the hedge and stockpile their swag of food totally unaware of RJ's secret, while RJ himself uses a check list to account for the exact stock he has to replace for Vincent.

The unsuspecting family extend their welcome to RJ to become part of the family, which RJ has never experienced before, the family build RJ his own little home in the woodlands and fit a television with 'like a thousand channels' RJ tries to talk himself out of the guilt he is feeling while Verne still feels the tingling sensation in his shell and suspects RJ, even trying to return the food over the hedge to the angered humans. This ends in disaster as all the food is lost after a chase through the housing area and leaves Verne distanced from his family.

With Gladys and the verminator building a fortress like protection system in the rear yard RJ feels his days are numbered until he spots Gladys planning a party and he plans a final raid on the home to replace all of Vincent's food in one raid. With lots of planning the family are set and the final raid commences. All pans out well with Stella distracting attentions, the family are in, but the raid goes on a little too long and RJ really needs them spuddies, with Gladys awake the following pandamodium sees RJ let the truth slip out. The following commotion allows RJ to escape while all the other animals are captured and look set for certain 'vermination'.

With seeing his new family captured and the fact that Vincent has shown up for his payment riddiculing him, the guilt gets too much for RJ, he takes the food ladened pull along trolley and veers it into the verminators truck, knocking Dwayne unconscious and allowing himself the chance to get onto the truck to free his friends with Vincent in tow. Pleading to his friends, the family manage to shake Vincent off and make a dramatic return to Gladys home. Thinking the woodland would equal safety the family find Vincent on one side and the verminator along with Gladys on the other side of the hedge, all after the family's scalps. A cunning plan hatched by RJ and verne is put into motion and without spoiling the end.......

the film finishes in great style !
