Waiting Until Later In Life to Become a Mommy

This is a continuation to my other lens, "Movie and TV Stars Become Mommies After 40". There were so many celebrities, that I divided them up in "Movie and TV Stars" and "Other Celebrities". I never realized how many celebrities are becoming mommies later in life until I started researching it. As you read along, you will note that I try to include as much detail as possible about each celebrity's pregnancy, such as, was in vitro fertilization used?

This page is meant to be an uplifting celebration of pregnancy and parenting for all women, especially older moms who may have thought that this would never happen to them. Please leave feedback below.

Madonna and son, Rocco Ritchie

Perhaps the most famous older mother in the world, Madonna (43) waited until 38 to fall pregnant with Lourdes, and gave birth to Rocco on August 11, 2000, just days before her 42nd birthday. Rocco's father is British filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

Helena Bonham Carter with daughter, Nell Burton

Kooky Helena, 41, and her equally quirky boyfriend Tim Burton, 49, nearly resorted to IVF in order to conceive their second child but it finally happened naturally. The couple did battle with some conventional - and unconventional - fertility treatments. Fearing that, like most women over 40, she wasn't ovulating regularly, Bonham Carter, a devotee of alternative therapies, decided first on a fertility drug called Clomid to stimulate egg production. "I had a terrible reaction to it. It turned out I was ovulating anyway," the actress told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper Monday.

After going to a North London acupuncturist who supplied a variety of teas to "build my strength up," Bonham Carter, also tried Tui Na (literally "push and grasp"), an acupuncture-related Chinese massage for patients who prefer to avoid needles. But with her biological clock ticking loudly in her ear, she realized Oriental medicine wasn't the solution she'd hoped for - and the next viable option was In vitro fertilization.

Before going for IVF, while being directed by Burton alongside Johnny Depp in the title role of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd, Bonham Carter discovered she was pregnant .

Jane Seymour with her twins, John and Kristopher

At age 45, Jane Seymour gave birth to twin boys by C-section a month before their due date because of high blood pressure complications. She shares her experience as the mother of multiples in her book Two at a Time: Having Twins - The Journey Though Pregnancy and Birth. Her sons, John and Kristopher, husband James Keach, and the rest of her family reside in Malibu, California.

"One baby is a miracle. To be given two at once is a gift beyond words," writes Seymour, already a successful children's author, in the introduction to her debut child-rearing book. The star of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman here gives a personal account of having twins at age 45. Best described as a diary of her pregnancy interwoven with advice and information on tests, ultrasounds, amniocentesis, exercise, and general dos and don'ts, this is not the story of an average mother's pregnancy (the star could afford special care, clothing, grooming, etc.). Yet her voice is compelling and reaches out to comfort and assist anyone expecting twins.

Supermodel Iman with husband David Bowie and daughter Lexi

Iman, now 53, had a baby, Alexandria (Lexi) at age 45 with rocker David Bowie". Iman has another child from a former marriage who is now 30. "People talk about the miracle of birth. No. There's the miracle of conception. I did IVF, but nothing happened. So I began to think of adoption, and then I got pregnant. It was definitely a miracle."

"The difference between rearing a child in your 20s and one in your 50s is one of patience," Iman says. "I was at the height of my career when I had my first child, and I took her with me around the world. Then I had to root her in school. It was difficult to leave her behind. Now this one thinks she has it tough because both her old parents are at home with her all the time.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schrieber with their sons

Naomi Watts, 40, and Liev Schreiber welcomed their second child, son Samuel Kai Schreiber. The couple have been together since 2005. Their first son, Alexander Pete, nicknamed Sasha, was born July 25, 2007, in Los Angeles.

Helen Hunt with daughter, Makena'lei Gordon Carnahan

Helen Hunt and her boyfriend Matthew Carnahan are the parents Makena'lei, who is named after a town in Hawaii where Hunt likes to vacation. Helen was 40 when her daughter (who was 4 at the time of this photo) was born.

In an interview with "Ladies Home Journal", Helen said the following:
"It turned out to be tougher to get pregnant than I thought it would be. I tried for a long time and it just didn't happen, to the point where getting pregnant became the greatest wish -- and the greatest challenge -- of my life. My fate wasn't to jump into the backseat of a car and have a baby. My boyfriend and I were on our last big try and if the baby hadn't come, we would have adopted. But then I did get pregnant -- in 2003."

What do you think of these celebrity moms?

  • squidshe Oct 31, 2011 @ 8:58 pm | delete
I think it's great that they waited until they were ready to commit to raising a child.
  • celeBritys4africA Sep 27, 2011 @ 4:39 pm | delete
    Great lens and great topic.

Even if 40 is now the new 40 .. I think it is much better for medical reasons to have your babies at 20 to 35. I know women do seem to wait longer now because of careers but if it is possible plan the EVENT for earlier years.
  • globedancer Mar 19, 2011 @ 10:45 pm | delete
I think that if one decides to have a baby past forty, it only means they really want to have one - so parental commitment is at least unquestionable. Rock on moms! ;-)

    Dear LissaKlar,
I have a feeling that to challenge the biological clock may not be a wise move and I prefer the pregnancy before 40. However, I understand that due to the career demands, these celebrities did not have time.

    I think it's great! ;)

    Hello, nice to meet you!
  • Jewelsofawe Jan 29, 2011 @ 3:38 pm | delete
It was interesting to read their stories. I did not know the story behind the baby and with David Bowie and Iman I had no idea they had a baby.
  • thrivingmom Jan 24, 2011 @ 8:51 pm | delete
I remember when 40 sounded old. Now I'm 34 and my husband is 42 and 40 seems young still. Plenty young enough to have a baby if you still want. But, I do think it would be really hard physically. I had all three of mine in my 30's and the physical part of pregnancy would have been way easier when I was in my 20's. But I wouldn't have been as good as a mom back then.
  • tandemonimom Jan 21, 2011 @ 8:04 am | delete
Very interesting! I had fourth (and last) baby at 38 and can tell you there is a big difference in pregnancies as you get older! Lensrolled to Celebrity Homebirths.

My best friend gave birth to her first when she was 42 with no complications. I know quite a few older mummies here in Australia. Quite a few of my friends had children in their late 30's.
  • kiwisoutback Jan 16, 2011 @ 7:58 pm | delete
I don't know the statistics, but it doesn't seem like average person/moms are waiting until their 40's to have kids - though it's pretty common to not start until late 20's, early 30's. It must be happening plenty often though, because in vitro is more popular than ever.
  • SoyCandleLover-Maker Jan 15, 2011 @ 3:20 pm | delete
More proof that 40 is the new 40. :D Brava!
  • poddys Dec 13, 2010 @ 3:58 pm | delete
Times are changing and women are having babies later. Whether it's a good thing or not I don't know.
  • LissaKlar Dec 13, 2010 @ 9:15 pm | delete
I guess time will tell. I always worry about how I will do the things with my one-year-old that I do with her sister now - when she is her sister's age (who is 11), like go on long bike rides, swimming, etc. Then I worry about how I will be almost 60 when she graduates and on and on. I try not to worry about it so much right now. I try to follow others' examples.

This book is definitely my baby bible. Having forgotten more than I remember about the day-to-day tasks of taking care of a baby, this book has been a lifesaver. It covers everything from breastfeeding, to symptoms of different sicknesses, and bathing. Best of all, it explains how your child is developing and what they should be doing each month of their life. I couldn't live without it.
