My Story: Overcoming Shyness And Building Self Confidence

If there's any topic that I can completely relate to, it would have to be shyness. I spent most my teenage years sitting at home on the computer. I didn't have the confidence to go play soccer with the other kids. It took me years to learn to overcome my shyness before I even learned how to play. I didn't fit it anywhere and nobody could understand. Deep down I expected it to disappear as I got older, but it never did...

Thats just how the world spins for some. You think that things will eventually get better on their own but they never do. I hope I'm not depressing you too much, that's not what I'm trying to do. I simply want you to understand the hardship that comes with shyness....

Reasons For Shyness

The first thing I had to figure out was, "Why was I so shy?".

When you sit yourself down and try to discover why you have no confidence, it takes a lot to admit to yourself what is really wrong. I couldn't figure it out. There was nothing generally wrong with me, I just couldn't be around a lot of people at the same time. Talking to women was not an option and giving a speech was impossible.

I did some research to find out what could cause shyness and I came up with this :

It could be due to a traumatic experience

Untreated depression or anxiety

Low self esteem or a poor self image

Positive Shyness -
your brain could be very perceptive of dangerous situations (basically, you weigh the pros and cons of a situation - this can be good sometimes while other times, it can be detrimental)

How To Overcome Your Shyness

I can be shy when I talk to women. I'm a shy dude - Nick Carter

I'm sure you've heard people say, when you feel nervous just imagine everyone in the room naked. Has this ever worked? When I was in a difficult situation, no amount of imagining was going to fix it.

I've also been told that the best way to overcome shyness was to jump straight into the hot water. I did this by going to a club alone to see if I could make some small talk with a girl. Needless to say that didn't happen, the night was pretty boring. I did ,however, feel better that I had taken a step towards overcoming my shyness. It wasn't a big step but it was a start.

Breakthrough

I'm shy, paranoid, whatever word you want to use. I hate fame. I've done everything I can to avoid it - Johnny Depp

I know some people that have lost their shyness completely as they got older and they became untamed forces in the wild.

I have learned to grow over my shyness and I will always be glad that I experienced. You will realize later that that tiny spot of shyness remaining will save you from a lot of misfortune and unexpected problems. It makes you more aware of dangers than most others and can give you an edge not known to others.

In writing this article, I hope to reach the thousands of others that have had to suffer through this as well. I followed some simple techniques to overcome my shyness and build my self confidence, this in turn boosted my self image. I've never looked back.
