The Rocking Horse Rut

We Chamber Members are hard working business people. We have the Franklin, the Covey, the Tracy method, the to do lists, our Outlook and Pocket PC -- and yet most of us feel like we don't have enough time in the day to do what we need to do, much less what we want to do! It's almost as if we are riding a rocking horse to nowhere.

We know that successful people do the things that unsuccessful people won't do. We may not like doing them, but we subordinate our feelings to the greater good and the goals we set. Then again, aren't we supposed to work smarter, not harder? Especially since the movie The Secret, and the teachings about the "Law of Attraction", we now hear "It's not What you do, it's How you do it." Does anyone else suffer from at least a twinge of guilt because we work so hard? The better question is "How can we integrate the What, with the How, with the Feelings, and make it all happen for us, our business, our community, our families, our lives?"

No one has more time than any other person. 24/7 is all we get. It comes and goes, whether we like it or not. Time Management is an oxymoron. This delusion has created a huge industry for seminars, brochures, calendar systems, software programs - all based on a false precept. YOU CANNOT MANAGE TIME -- YOU CAN ONLY MANAGE YOUR ACTIVITIES! It is important to do things, BUT you must do them "in a certain way" if you want to be effective and get off the rocking horse before the rut turns into a grave.

This truth shouts at us from every rooftop! Two people can sit at the same seminar, learn, and do the same things. One will better their life, while the other will simply complain about how miserable they are and "how it doesn't work." In any sales organization, there are people who have the same product, the same service, the same territory, the same leadership. They will do the same things. However, some thrive while others dive. How can this be?

Ponder this: Every act is in itself, either effective or ineffective. Every ineffective act is a failure. Are you still trying to do more of what hasn't worked so far - because you think that doing more of it will get you where you want to go? The cause of failure is doing too many things in an ineffective manner and not doing enough things in an effective manner. Are you setting yourself up for failure by doubt, fear, worry, anxiety, and disbelief?

The great news is that every effective act is a success in itself. If every act of your life is an effective act, your whole life must therefore become a success. Do every day, all that can be done in that day. Do not try to do tomorrow's work today or to do a week's worth in the day. It is not the number of things you do, but the efficiency, the effectiveness, the efficacy of each separate act that counts.

You can make each act a success. Every action is either strong or weak. When you are strong, you are acting in the "certain way". To make every act, strong and effective, hold your vision while you do it and put the entire power of faith, purpose, your inner belief into it. Celebrate the day's success, have the "attitude of gratitude" for everything.

However, most people will separate this truth about mental power imbued with faith from their personal actions. How many of us deliberately set ourselves up in cognitive dissonance -- an impossibility box? We go back and forth between what we think and what we know cannot be true. We act without true faith. I call this "THE ROCKING HORSE RUT." Many will choose to ride the rocking horse into a rut, and ultimately into their grave.

What is wrong here? More important, how do we fix it? HA!!! Tune in Next Month Chapter 6, "Cognitive Dissonance - Re Write your Hard Drive" - or you can email me for "the rest of the story."

NO FIELD OF DREAMS

(How did I get into This Business??) Mark A. Sippel, Attorney and Counselor at Law

How did you get into the business you are in? Was it the family business, the family trade carried down from father to son? Was it something your mother, your father, your uncle, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, or that high school buddy pushed you into - even though that wasn't your dream - your idea of doing business? Was it born of a sense of frustration being somebody else's employee? Did you have a Michael Gerber "Entrepreneurial Seizure?

Was it some slick talking multi-level marketing sales promotional Internet get quick rich scheme nothing down Tony Robbins it sounded so good and everyone was excited so I signed on, bought the sales kit, and....... Was it birthed in a bar after too many beers with buddies who said they'd be with you but abandoned you when he got tough? Did you rent the space, lease the copier, sign those personal guaranties, agree to the supply contract, commit to the production schedule, buy and stock the inventory, in other words, are you in too deep to get out?

Too many of us feel that if
we hang out a shingle,
get a sign,
get the store front and inventory
buy a business license,
join the chamber
have a ribbon-cutting,
pay for an ad in the Yellow Pages,

clients/customers/patrons will come.

Some of us have been in business for a long time, and as the customers dwindle, we wonder what is going on, what went wrong? Too late we find there is no Field of dreams where success grows like a fragrant poppies - poppies- poppies before the emerald city. The business falls asleep, leaving the Tin Man with no heart to cut the losses and close the doors.

So, what are you going to do to get back on track? GIVE UP THE FIELD OF DREAMS, AND FOCUS ON YOUR VISION. You are a survivor! You are in business for a purpose. You are here for a reason. Your business and the circumstances you now find yourself in are not an accident or terrible twist of fate. There are people who need you and what you offer! If you are not here, they will suffer. If it were easy, then everyone would be here!

Two quick action steps: Remove the words "I can't" from your vocabulary. Strike those words from your employees, your significant other, all the children and friends that you hang out with or spend time with. . Those words are poison. Have a jar with a two dollar fine for every time the words are used, and use it for a reward fund.

SECOND, stop complaining! Complaining is the food for demonic powers of darkness (and I am not talking in religious terms here.) Complaining is when you imagine something better for yourself, but you are unwilling to take the risk or make the investment to go after it. When you complain you give power to the negative in your life and you feed weakness and avoidance. Complaining can be very subtle and it needs to be rooted out and killed for yourself and for your significant other and for your employees.

Take charge! Change your thinking, which will change your feelings, which will change your actions, which will build new and better habits. The Secret Law of Attraction says, when you change and send out the right energy and vibrations, you will draw to you the very same. Next time we will talk more about concrete steps you can take to turn those dreams into realities.

BOOMERANG OR STICK?

How to Get More Life in your Business and Value in your Life

Mark A. Sippel - Sippel Law Firm

Are we putting too much time "working the business" - and not enough time into making the business work for us? Have we forgotten that our life is not our business but instead, act as if the business has become our life? What was once a joy to wake up for, a thrill to start, and a satisfying end of the day may have grown a bit thin. We fall into the rut of trading time for money -- and convert what should be a profitable business into a 14 hour a day, 7 day a week job. We keep putting out, and not getting back. This can apply to our choices of professionals we use and rely on for our businesses.

Did you know that the Australian Bushmen have a special word for a boomerang that does not come back? They call it a stick. Funny thing about a stick is that you have to find it, and then throw it again. What have you been throwing - that is not coming back to you? Have you been throwing more hours at the same old thing -- hoping for a different result? What about the professionals you deal with, from your hair stylist [barber?], auto mechanic, contractor, architect, engineer, Realtor, Dentist, Doctor, Chiropractor, Accountant or even your Lawyer? Are they really worth the monies and time you are putting into them?

ROI. Return on your investment. Knowing what you want, need, and trusting someone to provide what you cannot do for yourself. Sometimes, you don't have a clue what you need to get to the next level -- so you do nothing, or worse, you continue to do something that never brings you a return -- but you strangely feel better doing something. Are you the modern day William Tell, blind folded, shooting wildly into the darkness against all hope. Is there really a target? Did you hit it? How will you know?
If we measure life in terms of money and only money, we lose out on the deeper meaning. Time is much more valuable than money. We can always earn more money. Can you go back and recapture your time? Let me suggest that the best return on your investment is the one that multiplies your time, that extends your influence where you cannot go, that frees you to do the main thing.

Delegate lesser tasks, and hire expertise whenever you can to improve your efficiency. We should expect quality results from the professionals we give our business to, right? The value invested in Professional services trades your monies (replaceable) to gain time (irreplaceable). Use this concept when you think of building your own team of professionals.

Before you hire a Professional, be clear in what you want. The result you may have thought you wanted, may not always be the return you get - so who is to blame? Great lies of our time start with excuses you make to yourself. The next time you think of your Professional, ask your self, and them make them answer some basic questions, such as:
%u2022 What is it I really want done? What can I accept?

What does "DONE", "OVER", "FINI" (great four letter words) look like, sound like, feel like -- can we get there from here?

Can this professional perform that task at the level I need?

Do they have the experience, training, and qualifications to do this? How can I be sure?

Do I like their "bedside manner", their office presentation, staff? Have I checked with referral sources, reputation?

How will using this Professional add to my time, and generate a positive Return on Investment for the monies i pay, and the results I achieve?

AM I WILLING TO PAY FOR WHAT IS NECESSARY?
Don't settle for just throwing sticks. Turn your investments of time and money into boomerangs that come back to you with a positive return, and give you true value and more life in your business.
