HERE'S WHAT I THINK

PC's are Better Than Macs

There is no way you can tell me that a Mac is better than a PC. I've been a loyal PC user for years. I love the customizable components; I can upgrade the ram, change out my graphics card, etc. Not so easy on a Mac. Most people have PC's so I don't have to deal with compatibility issues, not true on a Mac. I can get a decent PC for under $800, good luck finding a Mac for under 1k! I can choose from all sorts of PC's from dozens of manufacturers, how many Mac models are there...4? Not only that, but most of the best programs that are available on Mac (the few that do exist) are usually available for a PC.

I added a section just below the Polls for "the future of Apple" and "the future of PC's". Add your comment and then vote the other comments either up or down depending on your preference. I'm looking forward to reading some great ideas!

I am also the author of a Marketing Blog where I share my ideas and rants about all things marketing related (SEO, social media marketing, etc). If marketing interests you, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks to everyone for making this lens such a success, let's keep it going!

What's Next for Apple?

We all know that Apple has done a great job in marketing their products and services, but what's next? Let's hear some of your ideas on some future products or verticals that Apple may enter. Are they just going to keep upgrading their current products? do we really need another Ipod?

http://www.davidalison.com/2008/02/hardcore-windows-guy-switches-to-mac.html

I have been a Windows developer for many, many years. Before I was a Windows developer I was a DOS developer. Always the sceptic I guess I had to try it for myself. I think I'm starting to get why he likes his Mac so much.1 point

Your Ideas on the Future of Apple

We have all seen the rapid growth of Apple, not too long ago their stock price was around the 80's, now they are in the 120's. The Iphone dominated the market and the Ipod is the mp3 player standard.

So where to now? Personally, I don't know how many more upgrades the Ipod can handle. Of course we will see another version of the Iphone, the mac, and Apple t.v. but I think Apple is really going to have to start making some changes. They are going to have create another "Ipod." Only, I'm no...0 points

What's Next for PC's?

What is the future of the PC? Are we going to see consolidation in the market, where only 2-3 companies will dominate the space? What is the next generation of computers (desktop/laptop) going to look like? All/any ideas welcome, the more creative the idea the better!

Future of PC's

No too long ago Microsoft released their "surface" PC (I don't have the link off hand but if anyone can post it that would be great, or type "microsoft table pc" into youtube). This computer is a revolutionary machine that may very well find it's way into most homes in the next few years.

I still remember my old school computer, remember those? they had the "turbo" button that would make the computer run faster. Those were great, along with my 56k modem I was flying through the net. And now?...0 points

PC's are Better Than Macs

Yes, you're right!

essjayar says:

I totally agree! Who'd want to spend all that money on an closed technology, limited, non-standard, Apple Mac? A PC wins in all areas except (possibly) desk top publishing - and that's debatable.

Steve Jobs and Apple have I admit the marketing nous to make a Mac *seem* better, but it's all style over substance. Get a cheap PC and it will be of more use than an expensive Mac!

the Mighty Fooda says:

I bought my wife a new Dell Studio 17 Laptop for $1500. It has a 17" LED screen, 4 gig memory, 350 gig HD, Plays Blu Ray, Comes with Blu Tooth mouse and a Blu Tooth Headset(that has a remote ON IT!)
We went too Mac too see how much the same(or closest) PC would cost there. $3768. And the memory and HD sizes were smaller, you couldn't even go that big with Mac Pros.
The cost the same my ass. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever buy a Mac.

Bob says:

Hell yes!!!

Alex says:

I'm sticking with PCs. I like the UNIX environment fine, but Ubuntu offers that for free and I can still dual boot with into Windows XP (until Vista becomes a little more usable), I can game (come up with a comeback for that one Macsters) without jumping through hoops, I built a gaming PC for $1200, where a similar mac would be at least $2000...personally I haven't ever had a problem with a Windows PC and I've been using them since my granddad gave me his Tandy laptop running DOS and Win 3.1 (man those were the days, I want _that_ operating system back!). Users are half the problem with most computer woes anyway, if you use it correctly and you're not stupid on it you won't have problems and it won't matter what operating system you're running. I ran Windows 95, 98, XP, and I've tried Vista. In 13 years of using computers I can count on one hand the number of BSODs I've seen when I'm using a computer.

Point is though, I don't really like paying upwards of $1000 for something I can build myself, customize, that does more...just because it has a glowing apple on the back. I'd mod my glowing case with an apple cutout if I wanted that...and I _still_ get "Hey, nice computer!" from all sorts of Mac users.

Jake says:

It's a toss-up for me, but I'll just say agree. When Mac's were PPC based, I could argue with differentiating them from PCs. However, both Macs and PCs are the same type of x86 hardware. The difference is really the bundled OS. Macs are bundled with OS X. PCs are generally considered to be those bundled with Windows. However, OS X can be installed on a standard PC and Windows can be installed on a Mac. I personally choose to use Linux, which will run (though admittedly not 100% of the hardware in some cases) on about any computer made during the last decade or two.

Now, since I am looking at this from a purely hardware perspective, I will admit that Macs are quick visually pleasing. The hardware is often said to be reliable from what I've heard, but can be hard to upgrade (such as iMacs). PCs are made with the same qualities. For instance, Sony Vaio PCs are great aesthetically in my opinion and HP computers are very trustworthy. On the Mac side, you have computers like the Mac Pro that are quite easy to upgrade.

As I've said, there is little difference between Macs and PCs. Really, they're both the same, but Macs all come from one company and PCs come from everywhere.

Jacob_Morgan says:

I'm actually in the market for a new computer. Everyone is making great arguments. I have never tried Linux on PC, maybe I should start off with that.

Carl I definitely agree with you, building your own PC is a great bonus, you get exactly what you want and can always swap out components.

Thanks for all of your comments guys, let's keep this going, it's really spreading. I encourage you to forward this lens to anyone you feel may be interested. Also, if there is something you would like added on here, taken off, etc. let me know. Pretend this is your site, I am open to all/any suggestions. So let's hear it!

Forrest says:

I agree 100%

bricks says:

PC's with Linux are the the best

Carl says:

I can build by own pc, no way to do that on a mac.

bdkz says:

PC's all the way. I think that Mac's are difficult to use and flakey.

JaguarJulie says:

Well, I only had a Mac once and it sat side-by-side with a PC that I used. I loved working on the Mac, but am weighing in on the side for PCs!

natdg says:

Not sure. Been using Windows for years but I want to own a Mac too.

Mark Schwartz says:

I work on both. PC at work, and Apple at home. Originally the Apple apps were so much more intuitive and easier to scale as I got better at them. But with the rise of Apple-like Apps through cloud-based 'puting, I can get much of the same functionality through either interface. For example, iPhoto was originally 'da bomb' when it first hit, but now I can get all that same functionality in Picasa.

GPSglobal says:

I have never owned a Mac, so I really don't know if PCs are better or not, but I will probably never own a mac and will never have to find out the difference. Perhaps this could be an assertion, and then the assumption could be that Macs really do not exist. Further, if Macs do not exsit, then their owners do not exist as well. Everyone I know owns a PC, so I could not disprove the assumption myself. There you are!

Matt says:

Two words: right-click

Max says:

PC all the way

TeeJay says:

Forgot to add: I am a designer - I run all of my Adobe stuff as well as 3D and other designery stuff on a Windows box.

Many designers may prefer to use a Mac. That's fine. But a Mac won't make you a better (or worse) designer. It is a matter of what you trust.

TeeKay says:

The computer you use does not make you more or less creative/forward thinking/efficient/productive etc. It's how you use the tools. An uncreative narrowminded person will not magically become creative and free thinking upon the purchase of a Mac. That is marketing BS.

Years ago, Apple's appalling engineering and unbelievably bad customer service (in Australia) pushed me to WindowsNT. I discovered I could do everything I used to do on a Mac - faster, more stable, more options, less expensive, and a genuinely helpful user base (not the thou-shalt-not-blaspheme-against-Apple brigade).

What an eye opener it was to a die-hard Mac fan. I never looked back. And I will never switch back because I no longer trust Apple or its products.

Filip says:

I prefer PC.

Jyoti Ranjan Pani says:

Pc's are better in the sense that they have some of the best programs written for them but where mac rules is in designing and creative stuff. You cant really stress test a mac as you can do with a pc.

No way, Monkeybrain!

techcat says:

Mac's are so much better! I switched from PC to Mac in october 2008 and am never switching back!

Jen says:

Mac's don't crash :D

Mark says:

It's easy to say your way is the best way if you've never experienced both sides. I have - and hands down Mac is far better than PC.

kishor says:

Mac's were the best and are still the best in the world.
I have used both the computers and feel the latest MacBook Pro laptop is the ultimate for high end users ie graphics and gaming.

samej says:

Software compatibility doesn't factor in the argument now that Macs are Intel based and can run Windows.
When looking at price people tend to think Macs are more expensive but when you compare with PCs of a similar spec there is not much in it and at times the Mac has come out cheaper. Of course you will never find a Mac as cheap as a PC but then that is not the market they are aiming for. It's a bit like saying you can't buy a BMW as cheaply as a Ford.

BostonRob says:

I used PCs for years and years and now that my friend turned me on to Mac, by buying me a Macbook ( nice guy huh ? ) I will never go near a PC again. Macs are so much better in every way..

Plus Leopard is amazing !

KilnGoddess says:

I just had my first taste of Vista via a computer at a school which I teach at...oh you poor poor pc users...I'm sorry, Bill has a lot to answer for.

Why is the harddrive 3 clicks in? To safely eject a flashdrive I have to click 4 times...I need a book just to figure where they hid the things that used to be right on the desktop...I thought macs were far better then previous versions of windows but wow macs blow vista out of the water for ease of use and user friendliness.

Mokeybrainnumba2 says:

PC is too general. It's like saying "Us against all those other things" It's the OS. I am tired of being promised one thing, & then actually lied to once I get it. Microsoft blew monkey chunks this time. Tired of spending 5 hours to suit up, & tired of having to armor up before hitting the internet. I switched to Ubuntu. I'm done.

joelheffner says:

Obviously, you've never used a Mac!

Connectionfailure says:

So how many of you tinkerers have opened up your Television, Washing Machine, Fridge or Toaster to upgrade them? PC fans are forgetting the original vision of the Macintosh: an Appliance. Apple already made expandable computers with cases that popped off easily...see the Apple //e for example. As a result, we still see that vision in the iMac models today.
No, Macs aren't perfect... anyone should be able to see that you shouldn't need to turn 40 screws to remove a hard drive from an iBook, however they are designed with attention to detail, an overall package wherever possible. And you must admit that many functions on the Mac require fewer mouse clicks to get to. Any functions not available in the OS are usually addressed by shareware and freeware developers.
Built in PDF support is nice. And about the lack of viruses for OS X, it's not purely because there are fewer mac users. The OS itself is more difficult to write viruses for. Apple just built it with fewer holes to begin with.

dean says:

A lot of the pro-PC arguments are based on misunderstandings. A lot of these have already been mentioned, but I'll summarise:
1) you can use a 2-button mouse with a mac, I have done so for years. Any USB mouse or keyboard will work fine
2) you can upgrade ram, hard disk, graphics card, optical drives, whatever, I have done all this with several different macs. In fact mac cases are deigned to make upgrading simpler, with accessible layout of components and easy access into the case.
3) Macs are fine for number crunching and all sorts of business and statistical application, just because they are advertised for creative type applications doesn't mean that's all they can do.
4) 'user-friendly' doesn't mean only for idiots.
I prefer Macs, I have used both platforms for many years and I much prefer the Mac stability and user interface. But PCs are fine too, really. I think the difference is mostly preference rather than anything really concrete (though the stability of MacOS v Windows is indisputable). Of course, is the discussion about hardware or OS? Cos Unix is more stable than either.
I do agree that the big downfall of Macs is the lack of games available. But as I am not a dedicated gamer, that's no big deal to me. (PS unlike the myth, you can get minesweeper for Mac)

Ross says:

Mac is better for day to day usage. PC is better for business. Linux is better for everything else.

Kim says:

I have used PCs most of my life and career and I'm tired of the insanity. I'm tired of the Windows updates that end up hurting your machine. I installed 5 updates yesterday and one totally disabled my laptops internal speakers and I couldn't undo the installation (after an hour of figuring out how to do that) so I had to find the driver and reinstall it. No one wants to do this! Why is it so hard to keep a PC up and running. My new vista machine has never liked my blackberry. That isn't right. I like the HP machine overall but the MS software and updates are too much for me to handle. Why do macs sound so much easier to maintain? I'm going to get a Mac and find out. Enough is enough.

Alex says:

I work on a pc at home and a mac at work-go figure. At work my system has never crashed. At home on the PC, it seems to crash all the time. If I had to take one over the other I guess it would be a mac for the simple reason that I have fewer problems, although the PC does not have to deal with compatability problems

Eric S. Levy says:

Pffft. Given that the current Macs run both Windows and the Mac OS, why choose?

Garou says:

I work on both platforms with no problems at all, but I will always prefer OS X over Windows in terms of usability.

grannyann says:

Nope, I am a converted Mac user and love it.

Kevin Heisler says:

Apple Mac - far superior. PC's are popular for two reasons:
1. Enterprise
2. Price
There's no question Mac's superior for graphic design. With universal search, that's more important than ever. Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask have all added images and videos to their SERPs (search engine results page). That means video/image editing are more important than ever for business, entertainment and blogs.

Thomas v Dam says:

Technically speaking Macs are better.

I just don't dare to switch after evolving from MS DOS 5.0 to Vista...

art_damage says:

i make music so i need to use both mac and pc. the hundreds of free synths on the pc side of things is fantastic... but having both, i must say i love working on the mac's better. i even keep an old os9 system going with my trusty Oasys PCI and Vision DSP. i like that system so much! there's a fair amount of abandonware for os9 that's free now that everyone's moved to osX.
OSX is the bomb though, and is fantastic for doing everyday stuff like mail and i love iMovie - i've gotten a lot of milage out of that program.

pc's are clunky.
mac's are well designed and very cool.

also i get into the insides of my desktop mac to upgrade memory add a video card for 2 monitors upgrade the CPU and more.
