Have You Ever Had a Pet Turkey

Ranked #3,525 in Pets & Animals, #89,083 overall

Red and White Tom Turkey -- so beautiful and entertaining !

We have a love of animals.
We have had many different kinds of pets. They all had their own personality.
We always learned something from them as we learned something about them and how to properly care for them. We have had pidgeons, chickens, geese,a horse,a cow and calf, dairy goats, meat goats, and a few turkeys.
We started out with about 10 young turkey chicks from the local feed store, but one by one something happened to them.
We were down to only the one red tom turkey and he was lonely so we found a beautiful bronze turkey hen .
She was sitting on a nest of eggs when a critter got her and her eggs ! We kept Tom for years with chicken hens for company. He "ruled the roost". We gave him to a gentleman who raises all kinds of birds when we decided to give up keeping chickens.
We still miss Tom and the hens......but they got a good home !

PET TURKEY

OUR STORY

Tom Turkeys know how to strut their stuff !For many years we had a Red and White Turkey Tom that was sooo beautiful !
He was a great" watch dog" ! The Fed-Ex guy learned to get out of his truck on the passenger side to avoid a confrontation from "TOM". When our son would ride by on his 4 wheeler -- Tom would try to race with him. I never knew a turkey could run so fast!! He certainly kept us entertained for years. Tom Turkey would do the "moon walk" every spring during mating season !!!

I love my pet because...

He really adds a lot to our family because he is so entertaining ! He still thinks my son is his daddy, because when my son is working on his 4 wheeler or lawn mower Tom will come and sit right beside him and sometimes when he wants attention he will make a funny sound and fluff up his feathers and blow up his air sack and strut around the yard. My son will laugh and pick him up and talk to him and pet him just like you would a dog. Tom loves it !

Neat lens! My parents used to have wild turkeys that came through every single day. I considered them my pets that I didn't have to take care of ;)

My grandmother had a pet chicken, but my own pets were the more conventional cats and rabbits. My mom had a pet badger though. Not your usual pet at all.

haven't had a pet turkey, the weird animal I'd like to have for a pet would be a hog. Not a pig because a pig weighs less then 125 pounds but a hog weighs more! enjoyed your lens this morning, thank you indeed.

We had two pet turkeys when I was growing up. They were really fierce and would make a lot of noise when strangers approached them. One day they even chased my dad biting his bottom. From that day one we were quite wary of these two pet turkeys.

Our neighbors had a pet turkey who adopted us. He used to spend his entire day watching us through our windows and would follow us on walks. He would even follow us to church (which we walked to) and would gobble as we sang hymns. Unfortunately, a panther eventually got him, but we have many fond memories of him.

[in reply to needatitleokc] I use to raise goats too. I had over 100 at one time. I always helped my "girls" deliver their babies. I milked the dairy goats and sold milk to a man who drove 45 miles one way each Saturday to get milk to give to a baby colt because the mare died when the colt was born. He raised that colt on goat milk ! I learned how to make soap and soft cheeses. It was fun. It got to be too much work for me and I had to sell them. I cried like a baby and interrigated the people before they bought them to be sure that they would give my goats a good home.

Haven't had a pet turkey but I had a goose who thought I was his girlfriend. Gonna write a lens about him one day. I have a few already on my pet deer. Animals are wonderful creatures that become friends.
