PETA is wrong in harassing animal rescue groups who treat animals humanely

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

PETA is wrong in harassing animal rescue groups who treat animals humanely

Animal rescue groups such as GW Exotic Animal Memorial Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma should be commended and supported for rescuing exotic animals who are in danger of a lingering and inhumane death. GW Exotics has many animals donated from individuals who try to keep an exotic animal in a home situation as a pet then find they are unable to adequately care for the animal or it becomes dangerous. One case involved the accidental death of a man who owned an alligator. The alligator was found in a concrete pond and brought to GW Exotics.

PETA harasses this park because they claim the animals are mistreated; however, the GW Exotics animals appear in good health and contented. The park is also closely monitored by government agencies to make sure the animals are in good health and go as far as weighing the animals to make sure they are not under or overweight. GW Exotics does allow exotic animals to breed and they ship extra animals to zoos across the US. PETA says animals should not be used to entertain .. does that mean that all of us who love dogs and cats shouldn't keep them because they entertain us and bring sunshine into a violent society? Is it wrong for us to be able to see exotic animals that we would otherwise only hear about? I don't think so! What about the issue of animal conservation - some animals are so close to extinction that captivity is the only way to conserve the species?

What's Your Opinion

Is PETA right and would animals be better off dead than in captivity?

Yes, I think zoos are inhumane

JP says:

In some cases, yes.

No, I think animal rescue organizations and zoos that treat humanely should be supported.

Robert, co-owner of TIRREOS says:

If PETA thinks all rescue refuges and zoo are inhumane then they must support poaching. If these organizations which truly care for these creatures of Earth Mother did not exist then there would not be many species still living. Most would be killed by poachers and those who hate certain animals. This is not the world which Creator started where there is balance, so it is up to people to save many animals from extinction. If Peta is against saving animals then they have lost their way from when they originally started and are for the extinction of most animal species. I and my family will continue to saving animals and do our part in rescuing them.

chris says:

Peta tell us veggie is the way forward and its wrong to eat meat.......its gone that far with these people that even pets such as dogs they own are kept on a veggie diet.. now that is cruel I would love to see a member of Peta offer a carrot to a lion and see the response......

Sylvestermouse says:

While I can see both sides, I certainly do not stand on both sides and I am not on the fence with this issue. I support any group that helps sustain life.

In a perfect world, I would not have to lock my doors either. The argument that I do not enjoy all of the Creator's intended freedoms would be certainly true. I do not have the freedom to roam the streets of a big city at night. I do not wish to become prey. I would not be better off dead than in a well fed, well maintained and safe environment.

This is the standard I use to weight my decision about animal shelter, any animal shelter including my own home.

wolftyrs says:

I can't agree with PETA's extreme position. Exotic and formerly wild animals who reside in the best sanctuaries and rescue centers are absolutely not "better off dead". I do agree with regulation and oversight, but not harassment. I've often felt that, though PETA does some good, they go too far and seem to abandon reason about certain issues.

On the Ownership of Pets: "We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of 'pet keeping'-i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as 'pets'-never existed", and attributes pet ownership to a "selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them", while not endorsing "set[ing] them free". ~taken from Wikipedia.com

How Do Animals End Up in Captivity

The Answers are Endless

type=textIf we lived in a perfect world, animals would not be in captivity. In the Bible we read: Isaiah 11:6-9 And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them so in Heaven there will be no need for animals in captivity. Now, however, animals have problems created by unthinking and uncaring people. We rescued two donkeys/burros that the Bureau of Land Management had brought into Oklahoma from California. Why? The animals were about to be killed because they were too plentiful. How did wild burros come to be in California? Gold miners used donkeys and toward the end of the gold rush the miners released the burros into the wild, not intending them harm. In the intervening years, however, the donkeys have bred and multiplied until the land that they are on cannot sustain them.

Although it is illegal in many states to own exotic animals, people break the laws. These animals have never lived in the wild and to release many of them now would mean that they would either starve or be killed by other animals.

We currently have four dogs that uncaring owners abandoned on our country road over a period of 5 years. Dogs, I know, are not exotic or endangered but this helps prove my point that humans too often cause problems for owners.
Important!

Never mistreat an animal.

Genesis 26-28 (the Message translation) God said:
"Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so that they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and yes, Earth itself and every animal that moves on the face of the Earth."

It's a complex issue. I worked in a small zoo and the animals were well cared for. I also worked in many animal related jobs where animals were seen as business. But I firmly stand by and support rescue groups. PETA seems to be getting a little fanatical these days.

Great lens, should be an interesting debate. 5*

Wow! You certainly jumped all over this one and if it wasn't such a serious issue, I would laugh. I definitely support Animal Rescue groups, Animal Conservations groups and US zoos and a lot of zoos across the world. For me the question is always about how well they are treated. Many, many animals could not and would not survive in the wild. So many have already been hunted to extinction. Angel Blessed and added to my Squid Angel Mouse Tracks.
