Even though I have many years of experience, more and more often I find certifications are being demanded. PMP is the one I would most like to get for project management. Thank you for the extensive and pragmatic help! I am especially grateful for links to your favourite resources.

I benefitted a lot from your site so felt morally obliged to come back and post this for the benefit of others.

I had exactly 10 calendar days to prepare for the exam. And had never touched the book before that. I had attended a 5 day training some 4 months earlier. (so, had forgotten everything)

If it helps anyone at all, here is how one went about it.

    1. First, understand your own strengths and weaknesses and play to them.
    For example:
    Strengths:
    1. Reading Speed
    2. Retention / grasping

    Weaknesses
    1. Attention Span
    2. Cannot think without coffee (serious handicap in the mode of this exam)

So, this is the timetable that worked for me. If its worth anything to any aspirant at all.
    Day 1 - 3: Read PMBOK completely.
Day 4 onwards - Read Rita. Start taking sample questions at the end of each chapter BEFORE reading the chapter.

Day 5: Start Mock tests. I used most of the sample question sites listed here. Oliver Lehhman was the best. By far.
    Day 6: Do nothing.
Day 7: Start taking mock exams. In exact exam conditions. Since my attention span was a problem, i worked hard to do a lot of questions, and to reduce per question time to about 30-40 seconds, so one could take a lot of breaks in between.
Day 8 : Rita Completed. (Finally!)
Day 9: Take 2 mock tests. One on the exact time of the exam to prepare for any unexpected hunger pangs/ lethargy time etc(Body clock surprises).
    Day 10: Have fun.

On the day of the exam, i was able to complete the first round in 10 minutes less than 2 hours. After that, i took a 20 minute break . Then, went through all the marked questions, unmarking them one by one. This took 3 iterations before all the questions were unmarked. After this, i submitted the exam in just over 3 hours.

My one last tip is to invest in reading speed if you have the time. That one skill made the difference between passing and failing. With a 250 wpm speed (the average reading speed for most of us), one could never have finished reading 1100 + pages in such a short span. If you have about 4-5 weeks of preparation time, please please insert reading speed lessons in your study plan, so that you are reading at at least 400 wpm on the day of the exam. It also gives a lot more time to review the questions at the end.

    Good luck.

i finished my training two months ago, how long time should i give myself before taking the exam 6months or 8months?
Which is the best book to buy for easy study
  • Brain_Washer Aug 5, 2010 @ 10:51 pm | delete
    Hello Diane,

Usually 3-4 months is an ideal duration to prepare for the exam. Wait too long, and you might lose the motivation. I recommend Rita's PMP Exam Prep or Head First PMP. You might find the following comparison useful:

Too good a collection and useful tips
  • Brain_Washer Aug 19, 2009 @ 9:13 am | in reply to Mandar | delete
    Hello Mandar,

Thanks for your feedback. Rita's Fastrack questions are almost similar (or maybe a tad simpler) compared to the real PMP exam. But again, it's a subjective matter and this is just my personal opinion.

The real exam is different from all the sample questions out there. But the sample questions do help a lot in getting your mind around the matter.

    All the best.
  • Mandar Aug 19, 2009 @ 6:30 am | delete
    Hi,
Hey this information is very good.
I want to ask you one thing are Rita' Fast Track questions are of same dificulty level of exam or they are very simple ones?
    Thanks

    Very useful information. Thanks!
  • Brain_Washer Jun 18, 2009 @ 12:29 pm | delete
    Hello See Soon,

It doesn't matter at all. You will get a free copy of PMBOK 4th edition even now. There's no indication of PMI membership fee hike. Note that the PMBOK Guide 4th edition was released in Dec 2008 and the exam is changing from June 30, 2009.

So, if you've decided to take the exam, just go ahead and join any time.

    Good luck.

Should I join PMI now that they will switch to PMBOK 4 after 1 Jul 09 or should I join after 1 Jul 09 (may be price may increase?). Reply me at SeeSoon.Hoo@gmail.com please.
