Imagine that you could decide when to publish and, in a few short months, have a quality printed book in your readers' hands - available through bookstores. Who wouldn't want that?

That's what a few enterprising souls thought in the late 1990s, when they realized the potential of digital printing and began offering print on-demand book publishing services directly to authors.

Books are printing as they are ordered, in quantities as low as a single copy.

Print On Demand Providers

Lulu
My current favourite. These guys are doing it right: no upfront fees, they share the profits in every sale instead.
Booklocker
A venerable entry: these guys started off doing ebooks and learned how to do what they do really well. Offering services to selected titles only, you'll have trouble getting them to carry fiction, but that's only because they are concerned with marketability and sales. A husband-and-wife operation, but don't let that fool you into thinking it is somehow small or amateur.
Xlibris
The grandaddy of POD-for-authors and the company I helped build. I don't rate them as my favourite any more because of their costs, but it's still one of the company where you can guarantee they know what they're doing.
iUniverse
Another older company, and my old company's first rival, so don't expect me to be fair... ;-)
Booksurge
Am hearing mixed reviews on this company, but since authors are a cantankerous bunch, don't let that stop you checking them out for yourself.
Infinity Publishing
A print-shop turned publisher, Infinity can print its own books
