PSYCH-K - an introduction

PSYCH-K is a form of Energy Psychology. It is an incredibly effective tool for re-writing the programmes of the subconscious mind. It can quickly and effectively change negative and self-destructive subconscious beliefs into positive ones, and its effects are lasting.

PSYCH-K was created and developed by Robert M. Williams MA who originally trained as a conventional psychotherapist, but quickly became disillusioned with conventional psychotherapy due to the fact that people spent so many years in therapy, sometimes with few changes. He began an intense study including various behaviour change techniques such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Energy Medicine techniques such as Kinesiology. PSYCH-K originally came to Robert Williams as a flash of inspiration and he quickly developed it into the most effective tool for changing subconscious beliefs available.

Robert Williams then teamed up with Bruce Lipton PhD. Dr Lipton is a world leading cellular biologist whose research has proven how belief affects biology, and mind affects matter. Together they provide the science behind how your cells are affected by your thoughts, and the tools and the means to change those thoughts on a subconscious level.

I discovered PSYCH-K when overcoming a seriously disabling case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The results that I had with it where phenomenal and it had an instantaneous impact on my health and well-being. I have since trained as both a Basic and Advanced PSYCH-K Practitioner, and I use it regularly in my practice as a Personal Development Specialist. I also use it with clients who are overcoming long-term illness and serious disease, with tremendous results.

The Personal Development Movement

A Brief Overview

In the late 1980's and early 1990's the Personal Development Movement became big business, and it has steadily grown in popularity ever since. People from all walks of life, of all age ranges and from a variety of cultures are choosing to create for themselves a life which is more than their preconceived destiny, and often more financially, spiritually or personally rewarding than that of their childhood. For those who started life in poverty or at least with financial challenges, it is refreshing and empowering to learn that we are in control of our own destiny and can be anything we want to be. This notion has become ever-popular since Rhonda Burn wrote and produced The Secret and popularized the Law of Attraction, and people began to realise that they are entitled to their own slice of wealth.

For others the personal development movement has brought a greater sense of spiritually, creativity, and personal fulfillment. We are now more than ever encouraged to live a full and bountiful life, and a merging of cultures has brought us more choice than ever to express ourselves creatively or connect with a deeper sense of self. We are saturated with books, courses, multi-media and the Internet - the world is literally at our fingertips.

For others still, personal development is about freeing themselves from their past. Painful life experiences in early childhood often leave their mark. In the past we would have grimly said that a person is "scarred for life" where as with the emergence of personal development a new hope has been born for those who would previously have lived with their pain and suffering.

Affirmations

The personal development movement brought with it the insistence that in order to change we had to practice affirmations. Affirmations are a positive statement about the change that we want to make. They are always stated in the first person, are positive, and focus on what we want to be true. For example: "I am fit and healthy;" "I eat a healthy diet;" "I am always kind to myself;" "I exercise 3 times per week" etc.

On first hearing about affirmations I became very excited! I joined the throngs of people who affirm daily and they became part of my personal development routine. I trained as a Life Coach and regularly touted the value of affirmations to my clients. It took me a while to admit to myself that for me, affirmations weren't always working, and the same was true for a great number of my clients.

The Subconscious Mind

Determined to get to the route of the issue, I spent a number of years deeply researching behavioural change. I took a teaching post with The Learning and Behaviour Support Service, working with inner city teenagers with extreme behavioural problems, and had in depth training and experience on behaviour change for a number of years in a variety of settings. But my deepest questions remained unanswered. I still didn't fully understand how behaviour change occurred and why some individuals were able to easily change whilst others continually jepordised their own success. I understood that it was about programming, but despite experimenting with NLP and other techniques, I did not find a way of consistently changing the programmes.

Then my life took an unexpected turn when I became severly disabled with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME. What at first seemed to be a huge disadvantage turned into an amazing gift. The condition forced me to face myself and find the answers I had spent many years looking for. I read and researched fervently until I came across my answer to what needs to change so that behaviour can change. The answer is the subconscious mind.

I'd always been aware that the subconscious played a role, but I had no idea of the tremendous power of the subconscious mind. It is an extremely powerful processor of information. Over 95% of our cognitive thought takes place in the subconscious mind, which leaves 5% or less taking place in the conscious mind. In fact the conscious mind processes an average of 2 thousand bits of info per second and can manage just a few tasks at a time, whilst the subconscious mind processes an average of 4 billion bits of information per second and can handle thousands of tasks simultaneously.

Childhood Conditioning

The majority of the responses of the subconscious mind are 'programmes'. These are often learned in childhood and it seems that we replay these programmes again and again in our adulthood, despite the protests of our conscious mind.

Young children carefully observe their environment and download the worldly wisdom offered by their parents directly into their subconscious memory. As a result their parents behaviour and beliefs become their own. Bruce Lipton PhD

The reason that children are so easily 'programmable' is related to brain wave states. There are four main brainwave states - Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta. Children under six are predominantly in Delta or Theta brain wave states - these are the states Hypnotherapists drop their clients into in order to make them more suggestible. This explains why children are like sponges, absorbing the beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of the adults around them. Their programmes come from family, significant adults, peers, the church, education, the media etc, and enter into the subconscious mind as though they were truths. Even if later on in life a person does not agree consciously with an idea or a concept that they learned in childhood, it is still etched on the subconscious mind, causing automatic behaviours and responses.

Goal Setting

The relationship between the conscious and the subconscious mind has powerful implications for goal setting and affirmations. Whilst it is the conscious mind that creates the goals it is the subconscious mind with all its habitual responses that determines whether the goals will be reached or not. All the affirmations in the world will not change a behaviour if our automated response is stronger.

Many people are disappointed when they try and accomplish their goals. They are unaware that the subconscious mind is not at all clear about the specifics of those goals and cosequently it often seems to sabotage rather than support them.
Robert M. Williams MA.

Using the PSYCH-K process you can quickly and readily identify your goals, and then change the subconscious beliefs that are preventing you from achieving them.

The PSYCH-K Process

PSYCH-K uses a process of whole-brain integration so that the left and right side of the brain can work together. Usually we operate more strongly from one side of the brain, particularly when we are facing an issue or a problem. But PSYCH-K enables us to operate simultaneously from both the left and right sides of the brain, creating a whole-brain state, and thus permanently rewriting our negative subconscious beliefs by changing them to positive ones.

The unique thing about PSYCH-K is that we can test it's effectiveness to ensure that it has worked. In the basic technique we take a belief statement, pretty much the same as we would if we were creating an affirmation. The statement is always first person, positive and meaningful to us. Examples might be "I am free to be happy and healthy;" "I enjoy taking care of myself physically;" "I love myself unconditionally;" "I trust myself to manage my finances;" "I trust the decisions I make;" "I accept myself as I am" etc. Using muscle testing we can determine whether this statement is true to our subconscious mind. Similar to the muscle tests used in kinesiology, we can ask the subconscious mind questions and our muscular system acts in pretty much the same way as a lie detector, responding weakly if the statement is false, and strongly if the statement is true. If it is not true in our subconscious then no matter how many times we affirm it, at least 95% of our cognitive thinking process will not believe it.

If we test weak we use one of a variety of techniques to create a whole-brain state about the statement that we wish to be true for ourselves. Once we have balanced using PSYCH-K we can then use a muscle test again to insure that the statement has become true to the subconscious mind. This is one of the positive and unique things about PSYCH-K - we can actually test if it has worked. When the muscle tests strong and the statement is true to the subconscious mind, we do not need to repeat the the statement over and over again like an affirmation. If it is true to the subconscious mind then we do not need to battle for it to sink in. The programme has been completely re-written, much like updating the software on your computer, and the effects are permanent. This is what I call effortless change!

This does not mean that PSYCH-K is a panacea. If you have reprogrammed yourself to exercise regularly you still have to physically do the exercise. But unlike before when you may have been struggling against negative programmes that you are 'not an exerciser' or that you are 'inconsistent', instead you will have a subconscious belief that you 'enjoy regular exercise' or that you are 'consistent' in your care for yourself. This will in turn affect your motivation and performance.

So What Would You Like To Change?

With PSYCH-K the world is your oyster! You can work on self-esteem, relationships, spirituality, personal power, prosperity, health and body, grief and loss etc.

And with an Advanced Practitioner you can improve your rapport, change and balance your core beliefs, balance relationships with friends and loved ones, overcome birth trauma or fear of death. And as we are all connected in the same energy field we can even work from a distance in surrogation for friends and loved ones.

PSYCH-K therefore takes personal development to the next level, and takes the struggle out of personal change.
