Paczki Day In Chicago - Delicious Doughnuts For Fat Tuesday!

It's the most delicious day of the Spring in Chicago - Paczki Day! Never heard of packzkis? They're a delicious Polish doughnut primarily eaten on Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent). Paczkis consist of deep fried dough in a circle shape, filled with jelly or sometimes cream, and topped with icing, glaze or powdered sugar. Yum!

Because of Chicago's sizable Polish and Polish-American population, Paczki Day in Chicago has become an annual tradition, with lines starting early outside of bakeries every Fat Tuesday, and Chicagoans of all ethnic and religious backgrounds chowing down on this delicious doughnut treat.

Why Do We Have Paczki Only Once A Year?

First, because we'd be busting out of our clothes if we had these delicious but fattening treats more often!

The real answer -
Traditionally, Paczki were made as a way to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, before Catholics would start fasting practices of the Lenten season.

I've never heard of this obviously well-loved day of doughnuts. I wonder if Paczki Day could be celebrated, even vicariously, in Australia?

paczki are popular in our area too! Very large Polish population worked in the coal mines here in eastern Ohio just one or two generations ago. My husband is only third generation American (and it looks like his grandfather was almost born on the boat on the way here!)
    Yummy treat indeed!
