Images of Greece in My Art

Greece is a Magical Place for Artists

Some places we visit evoke strong feelings for artists, which cause us to turn to our favorite medium of expression. Georgia O'Keefe had the American West. Claude Monet had his garden in Giverney, France. Paul Gaugin had Tahiti. For me that place is Greece.

When I travel there I try to take some kind of art supplies with me like pastels or pencils and ink pen. My motivation is that I would duplicate the scenery to remember the crisp and colorful landscape and those feelings I had while in that magical place.

When art supplies are just not available I turn to my camera to photograph my surroundings. I can later review my photos and jog my memory of the beauty of the place. The azure blue sea that is reflected in the cloudless sky. The rocky brown and green landscape dotted with white washed houses of which the window shutters are painted in pastel colors of pink, green, blue or sometimes ochre.

Ancient stone churches, monasteries and white marble ruins mingle with houses new and old, giving the sense of a long ago yesterday and a beautiful here and right now.

I have to admit, my family hails from different parts of the country. In that respect I have ties that bind me there. But Greece is just such an exciting and colorful place that always motivates me to draw or paint. Everything I see can become a different piece of art.

The history and vibrant colors of Greece is terribly inviting. When I view photos in books I am mesmerized and I feel I am transported to that other world. However, seeing the vista in person is so much more breath taking.

Being in Greece, I can take a good, long, deep inhale and slowly let it out as I look out at the scenery. My eyes are dazzled by how brilliant the light is and how it plays with the colors of objects in even the darkest shadows.

With paint brush or pastel chalk in hand, I try to capture that particular play of light to later remember the feeling the place gives me.

Time and Space

Delphi, Greece Watercolor

When we travel to Greece, we must visit with family members who want to shower us with attention.

Of course, they are thrilled to see us and we them. Slipping away to make art in that environment, however, is not going to happen!

Just once I would love to be alone at our small island home. I dream to pick my way through small, narrow streets, past old villas and older churches, to the nearby sea where I can set up my paints and work.

All alone!

Just for Now

Parthenon Freize, Pastel

Sometimes we need to be at ease with what is possible.

Just for now I have to be content with the images of Greece in my mind and my photos.

While it isn't always easy to travel to a place so far away, I carry with me the feelings I remember from my visits.

If I close my eyes, I can somehow recreate the bright sun in that blue sky. I imagine the white houses against the backdrop of the deepest blue water. A palette of the most amazing pastels opposing the deepest darks.

From the vantage point of my studio easel I can imagine. It's the next best thing to being in Greece.

I much prefer painting from life. Something about working from photos just doesn't offer the same experience. But if the weather's awful what can you do?

In your studio, photos?

good4us_all says:

I have yet to develop my talent, so, indoors = in private! (though the thought of creating "live" is quite appealing)

kiwisoutback says:

In the studio with photos. Plein air is very difficult so I commend anyone with the patience for it.

Wysiwigs says:

Live would be my first choice, but unfortunately reality dictates I work from photos at the dining room table (a studio is also not in my reality :o)

What do you think?

Drop me a line.
