Versailles Palace Decorations

This is Louis XIV welcoming you at the entrance.
Versailles Palace contains an incredible collection of Arts, I called them Decorations as they are so diverse, resourceful and complex.

It is not just classical paintings and sculptures, it is also a design concept, each room, ceiling, wall, staircase is different.

He assembled a team of grate artists at the times to decorate his Palace, the France arts was revitalized, new and old industries prospered and even inventions was created for his beloved palace.

The best example was the need of water supply for the garden fountains which had 1,400 jets. The initial project was to create an aqueduct for a nearby river (Bievre), but this wasn't able to supplied 62,000 hectoliters of water per hour. Then the water engineers invented Marly's contraption machine, when that wasn't enough they use water from Eure river, different ponds and huge reservoirs was created. This really was a huge project in itself.

This is a different angle of the Louis XIV Statue in front of the Palace.

Now I welcome you to Decorations exhibition at Versailles Palace.

Ceilings

Louis XIV loved Italian painters and he invited: Veronese, Simon the Pharisee, Francois Lemoyne to his Palace. All ceilings are painted, I selected only a few.

Let's start our journey with a detail of a ceiling painted by Francois Lemoyne.
This is the ceiling of Hall of Hercule.
The artist worked 3 years on the painting of 315 square meters from which this is just a detail. The entire work represents the Apotheosis of Hercule, some groups represent the Gods of Olympus, the Vices and the Virtues.

The next one is the ceiling of Hall of Peace, frescoed by Le Brun. The 4 sections represent peace with Spain, Christian Europe, Germany , and Holland, In center is France with 4 Doves.

A detail from the ceiling from the Music Room, it represents a decoration with a frieze and Musical instruments.

In this room, eight years old Mozart played the harpsichord for the King's family and the child prodigy fascinated the entire court of Versailles.

Furniture and Other Decorations

There are thousands of beautiful objects, and symbols.

I chose to show you the emblem of the Sun representing the power of the King and the Royal Scepter and the Hand if Justice. I this it is a powerful symbol of France.

The Queen's bed with its hangings and the canopy decorated with ostrich feathers and plumes.

This is a beautiful piece of furniture in Queen's Apartment, the Jewel - Cabinet , on the wall you can see a door through which the Queen escaped when the Palace was invaded by the mob on French Revolution (1789).

I created a close look from Jewel-Cabinet with France Crowning the Arts. It has inlays in pearl, glass, ivory, white Serres porcelain imitating Wedgewood, and a lot of bronze appliques.

This is a room in which you can admire the painted ceiling, the bas-relief sculptures, and the a paintings on the walls

Paintings and Sculptures

Paintings and Sculptures are so numerous, I have no idea how many they are but the entire design of the rooms definitely exploit any angel of their beauty.

In the first Versailles lens I show a room called - The Gallery Of The Battles inaugurated in 1837 by extraordinary dedication of Louis Philippe.
That room is a 120 meters long and has paintings which commemorate the glories of the France Armies.
I present to you a couple of them:
  • Count Eudes defends Paris from the Normands in 886
  • Battle of Rocroy 1643
  • The taking of York Town 1781, an important battle which ensured the Americans of their victory over the English during the War of Independence, when the efforts of the soldiers of the young America and France were joined
  • Battle of Wagram 1809, the Emperor Napoleon observes the advance of the Austrians.

I have been to Versailles and visited the gardens surrounding the Trianons but nothing prepared me for the delight to be found in this fascinating book about the creation of the gardens in general, and specifically the influence of Marie Antionette.
Marie-Antoinette's entire private domain and its story are told in beautiful photographic detail by François Halard for the first time since its recent restoration.
