How do I know which Plasma TV to buy?

One moms hunt for a quality Plasma HDTV...

My family and I love to watch movies together, and it's important to me that we have a quality experience and feel as if we are at the theater, complete with surround sound. We have a very large living room and I like to actually see what I'm watching so I prefer a very large screen, this way I can sit across the room and still see it clearly.

I basically shopped at several electronics stores over the course of a couple months and stood in front of all their televisions for hours and hours looking at all the pictures. One thing important to me was the ability to view the picture from a side angle and not lose any clarity of the picture, as several TV's that I viewed became distorted when viewing them from an angle.

Since my family sits in various spots around our living room (chair, couch, floor, ceiling, etc.), I wanted to ensure that everyone could see the same picture without losing any quality. The Panasonic VIERA looks absolutely perfect from any angle.

The Panasonic G10 Series had the best picture of all the TV's that I viewed. It has bright vivid colors, high color accuracy, a deep black color level, excellent motion processing, and a more compact frame (though it doesn't swivel) which makes for easy wall mounting, which we didn't do.

It has a VGA PC input jack that is paired with RCA audio input, however it does not support 1080 HD on a PC, it only supports 1280 x 768, but we don't really use it to connect to our PC, so this part wasn't a big selling point for us.

We are happy with our Panasonic and enjoy our enhanced movie experience! Two thumbs up for Panasonic!

Plasma HDTV Pros & Cons

Is a Plasma HDTV right for you?

PRO's

  • 20% improvement in picture quality over lower resolution TV's

  • Flat panel design is lightweight and thin in depth making it perfect for wall mounting

  • Available in 720p and 1080p high definition formats

  • Extremely precise black levels

  • High black and white contrast levels

  • Perfect colors and crisp clean lines

  • No image blurring and/or motion issues like LCD TV's may have, which makes it ideal for watching programs with fast complex motion, such as sports and action movies

  • DVI inputs for digital HDTV

  • HDMI digital video connections (MPAA standard for digitally encrypted HDTV)

  • Analog connections: S-video, component & RGB

  • True 16x9 HDTV that reproduce movies in the correct shape (aspect ratio)

  • Includes video processors that allow users to take lower resolution signals from a 480i TV show (such as one recorded on TiVo) and upgrade it to a higher quality picture

CON's

  • Lacks the overall brightness of an LCD TV, and are not recommended for bright areas or rooms with direct sunlight

  • High energy consumption, using twice as much energy as an LCD TV

  • Susceptible to burn in if an image is left on the screen too long, which is why it is not typically recommended for video gaming (many manufacturers now have built-in precautions against burn in, so it's not as much of a concern as in the past)

  • Picture quality can degrade over time due to phosphor wear, such as traditional CRT TV's do

  • Fragile

  • High price

Customer Reviews from Amazon

"CNET rated the panasonic at 4 stars, but that is in comparison to the Pioneer model which is discontinued, and costs twice as much money. Click here to read the full review.

Simply put for the money, this is the BEST t.v. out there, i spent about a month going to stores, comparing features, and with the exception of Viera Cast i love everything about this t.v. I have morning sun in my room, but i found that i could still see the t.v. from almost any angle. And the picture quality is breath-taking."

"Have had this TV for almost 2 months. Shipped promptly from Amazon - best price on the web. Excellent picture, color, clarity and no motion blur! I'm somewhat of a "techie" and did a significant amount of research on TV's - LCD vs. Plasma. Bottom line: Plasma has better blacks, better off angle viewing, less motion blur for fast moving scenes and far better value than LCD. I was convinced LCD was better until I did the research, did some comparison viewing, and looked at the costs. I've also been a SONY fan for many years (CRT's, walkmans, headphones, CD players, etc) but am very impressed with Panasonic's product here. Easy to use, great picture, and THX mode makes movies and TV shows look like they should, not like a computer monitor....highly recommend this set and Amazon."

"I ordered this TV for my new townhouse to be mounted over my living room fireplace. Due to the size of the cutout, I couldn't go any bigger than 42". Needless to say this TV does not disappoint! I have a 50" Samsung 1080p LCD in the basement that I paid almost twice as much for, and this TV blows it away. The quality of the picture and the black levels are unbelieveable. There is a little bit of a green hue to the factory settings, but are easily adjusted. The THX picture setting is amazing, but I only recommend it for dimly lit to dark rooms. The other settings for lighter rooms will still wow you. The PS3 games and Blu-ray movies are jaw dropping. I easily recommend this TV, and the price right now (under $1100) can't be beat!!"

Would you like to receive a gift card or an actual gift for Christmas?

Do you give gift cards or actually buy a gift from the heart?

I don't know about you, but gift cards seem way to impersonal for me. I enjoy seeing the anticipation and excitement on the face of the receiver when they open my gift, and you just don't get that with a gift card. I also think it's more fun to see colorfully wrapped presents under the Christmas tree, rather than a bunch of little envelopes. Don't get me wrong, gift cards have their place, it's just not under my Christmas tree. Yes, sometimes you have to return gifts, but I still have a lot of fun searching for, buying and wrapping those special gifts. How about you, do you prefer the gift or the card?
