Pangea 3D Animation and Modeling

A number of years ago I was contracted by a small company in Canada to create video game models of everything from vehicles and environments to Castles and swords. The very first 3D model I developed was a 3D Galleon ship which the players in this massive multiplayer world would be able to ride and control.

Using reference gathered from the internet I began modeling. The goal was keep the polygons low while maintaing enough detail to look slightly realistic. Based off of the feedback from the client as well as many positive comments from users on my website, Pangea 3D , I think I hit the mark.

The did the modeling in 3D Studio Max 6 at the time using polygonal modeling tools and standard UVW mapping. The model can be downloaded at www.Pangea3d.com.

One of the tools I use on a regular basis is a 3D Laser scanner. This is a technology which isn't well known to everyone but is very cool!

Just for fun I like to scan Star Wars toys and other such things. For this scan I chose one of the Bounty Hunters from the original Star Wars movies, Empire Strikes Back. I can't seem to remember the name of this particular character.

The laser scanner scans the surface of the object, rotates the object and scans again. It repeats this process as many times as I tell it to until all sides have been scanned. Based off of the data it collects a 3D model is generated ( textures included).

Star Wars Bounty Hunter 3D Model

While working at a company called 3D Energy I was tasked with creating photo realistic 3D product models of mainly laptop computers. Using 3D Studio Max, photoshop and AfterFX I produced a number of videos which sales people then used when pitching the products to potential customers.

Each video outlined various features of the laptops such as DVD trays, ports, screens, finger print ID, etc. The feedback from the sales people was wonderful. They all found the videos to be VERY useful when giving presentations and explaining the potential of the products to clients.

I spend a good deal of time outdoors and on a recent hike in Bristol, NY on STID hill I came across a skull. I wasn't too sure what the animal was but I am guessing it is a goat. I have put in a request with some archeaologists to help me ID.

Anyway I decided to bring it home as it lends itself perfectly for 3D Laser scanning. So I scanned it and exported it as an OBJ file. The 3D model is over 500,000 ploygons and very detailed. I really enjoy using the laser scanner for fossils and artifacts such as this because it makes me feel like a scientist =)
