Two slices of of Italian bread stuffed with delicious goodies such as mozzarella, tomatoes, prosciutto, fresh basil, roasted red peppers, or whatever else makes you happy. Brush with extra virigin olive oil, then press between the hot plates of a panini grill for the best Italian style sandwich outside of Italy.

That is the basic recipe for a great panini sandwich (sometimes called a grilled Italian sandwich). Switch out the cheese for another you like better, swap the meat with your favorite, add some sliced olives, or spinach, or anything you like - there are no hard and fast rules here.

After reading this page you can use one of my personal favorite recipes, find a best of the web recipe link, or follow your imagination to make the best panini sandwiches ever.

Grilled Caprese Insalada Recipe

Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil Panini

One of my favorite things to eat is a Caprese salad which consists of slices of fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes and a few fresh basil leaves drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and speckled with dried oregano, salt and pepper.

I also like eating my Caprese salad as a sandwich. Although just putting the Caprese Insalada between crusty slices of Italian bread is good, trust me, grilling it into a panini is even better!

To do this simply combine the above listed ingredients between two slices of bread then brush the outside of your Caprese sandwich with a bit more olive oil and grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Again, I am not going to tell you that you need to use specific amounts of the ingredients. When it comes to making paninis I happen to agree with a fairly famous hamburger joint slogan in that you should always "Have it your way!"

If you happen to like more tomatoes and less cheese, go for it. If you want to leave out some of the spices, or add a few more of your own, just do it!

Always Use High Quality Roasted Red Peppers

Many panini recipes call for the addition of roasted red peppers. Using good quality, great tasting roasted red peppers is important to the over-all taste of your finished product.

If you can't roast your own fresh red peppers, I recommend that you try Fire Roasted Red Peppers By Paesana.

Having a Party?

Panini Appetizers

Paninis make some of the best hot party appetizers around and they are so easy to create. Simply make your favorite panini sandwiches and cut them into bite sized pieces. They can be cut into square or triangular shapes. Arrange your panini tidbits on a platter and serve!

An average sized panini sandwich should yield approximately 8 appetizers. Although I wouldn't recommend serving these for a large party, there is simply nothing better than panini appetizers at a small gathering or an impromptu get together.

Tip: When making appetizers from paninis I suggest that you NOT overstuff the sandwiches. Overstuffed panini sandwiches aren't easy to cut and can get messy.

Just a quick note, "panini" actually translates from Italian to English as 'sandwhiches', not hot or grilled. "panino" would be the singular. That is why you would sometimes see it as 'grilled panini', to differentiate.
