Well there goes the diet out of the window! I have a super weakness for bread anyway and my personal favourite has to be a tomato, danish salami and gouda panini (or panino as my Italian partner is always telling me). I love to cook, eat and even talk about food, and I guess I just added read about food to the list! A perfect lens.

Oh, I knew I would get hungry visiting this lens of yours. Once I had roasted red peppers, I was hooked on anything with them (in soups they are great too). That one with spinach, mozzarella and roasted red peppers is one I must try. Panini sandwiches are served up in quite a few places here in Toronto, Canada - even in hospital cafeterias. Googled +1'd this gem.

I've been in Italy for a few weeks now, and I have to say that these recipes look much more appetizing than the panini served here, which are often just cured meat and cheese with no vegetables or condiments, making them very dry.

I was surprised to discover that caprese, one of my favorite types of salad, is not usually served with basil in Italy (they use lettuce instead).

And the appetizer of bread with a dish of olive oil and pepper is purely an American invention (although not a bad one, I might add). Here, if you want olive oil with your bread you order bruschetta. The SCH is pronounced like SK, not SH. Bru-SKEHT-ah.

Panini sandwiches are lush, there is a couple of places in town that do them. On the down side my son took the Panini sandwich maker with him when he left for University, I think that's more upsetting than not seeing my son Joe for a while (kidding). That's my son left, I use his pic because he let me and he is more handsome (not).

  • smiths04 Feb 27, 2011 @ 9:13 pm | delete
I really enjoyed your lens and I will really enjoy some of these recipes. I only have one critique...Something you should add to this is the temperature and time ratio. I know this may get a little scientific with the surface area of the bread and the thickness of the sandwich, but this is what sets a panini apart from a sandwich made with a George Foreman grill. The perfect panini has a nice crispiness on the outside and all the ingredients are warmed through. Just a thought.
