An introduction to the sport of Paragliding and Paragliders

An introduction to Paragliding and Paragliders, which should prove useful to anyone wanting to learn more about the sport, and also provides up to date news and views about Paragliding and Paragliders, which it is hoped will be of interest to experienced pilots.

Paragliding is closely related to hang gliding but whereas a hang glider has a rigid frame to maintain the wing shape, the shape of a paraglider canopy is maintained by air pressure. Paragliders were developed from parachutes and fold down into a small, easily carried, package.

With paragliding, you just cast yourself off from a high cliff or mountain top and enjoy soaring flight, quickly learning why birds sing in the sky.

The picture is a truly beautiful photograph of a paraglider giving a tandem ride over the Oman Gulf, off the shore of Oman. It was taken by Mark Karstad.

X-Alps

The toughest paragliding competition in the world.

Starting July 19, 2009, thirty super-fit pilots from all over the world began a race over an 818 km route across the Alps from Salzburg to Monaco. They had to fly or hike the entire route, carrying their equipment which weighs about 20kg. The race was the legendary X-Alps.

9 days, 23 hours and 54 minutes after the start, in a blistering new race record, Christian 'Chrigel' Maurer (SUI3) landed in Monaco to become the 2009 Red Bull X-Alps Champion.

My sister was a passionate paraglider. She is grounded now after being in a car accident in France, but it sure would be cool to learn to do it and take her for a tandem ride. I bet she would love it! Hmm... Cool Lens. Thanks for sharing.

I watched many people doing this in Nepal, gliding above the Himalayas. I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to do it, but it does look exciting and beautiful too. *Blessed*

Good to meet you, Geeve, and even better to find out that you have a passion for paragliding! It was every bit as awesome as it sounds taking a tandem flight in the Alps. I would love to learn to fly solo.
