Pashmina and its use around the World

Through out my travels to different countries, I noticed that in many countries women make use of wraps or shawls in their outfits. Such wraps are very popular in India, Pakistan and Nepal. They are most often used during winter, when the women try to keep warm with beautiful soft cashmere or wool shawls.

During my travel to Dubai two years ago, I purchased some of these shawls to sell in my store. I have Pashmina shawls which are a mix of cashmere and silk, and I have more sophisticated evening shawls for special events and parties, made of embossed velvet and hand beaded with a beautiful peacock design.

I hope you will visit my store and check out my shawls. Thank you for stopping by.

What is Pashmina?

Pashmina is a light gauge silky cashmere fabric (available in many high-pigment shades) worn in the shape of a draggy shoulder-dusting shawl with skimpy strings passing off as tassels. It has suddenly sprung a life of its own and has become useful garment to wrap around and keep warm without having a heavy jacket or coat.

Pashmina shawls are versatile accessories that can be worn year round. It is terrific for the evening, particularly with higher end, beaded Pashmina shawls. Here are some different ways to wear the Pashmina:

1) Try wearing a shawl draped around a sleeveless dress for a warm, yet stunning look.
2) Tie it around your waist or accent a suit or other garment.
3) Wrap it around your neck as a scarf, or muffler or leave your coat at home and wear it as a jacket.

Now you can own one of these shawls to get ready to use for the upcoming holiday season. Please click here to check out the Pashmina and beaded shawls available in my eBay store, or go to my eCrater store.

The Origin of Cashmere Wool

Cashmere wool is wool obtained from the Cashmere Goat and is also known as Pashmina.
The name derives from an archaic spelling of Kashmir. It is sometimes incorrectly applied to any extremely soft wool regardless of origin.

Source of the Fiber:
The Cashmere (Kashmir) or goat down is the source of the wool that becomes Cashmere fiber for clothing and other textile articles.
The goat (Capra hircus laniger) is a mammal belonging to the subfamily Capinae of the family of Bovidae .
The goats produce a double fleece consisting of a fine, soft undercoat or underdown of hair mingled with a straighter and much coarser outer coating of hair called guard hair. In order for the fine underdown to be sold and processed further, it must first be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separated the coarse hair from fine hair and after de-hairing the resulting cashmere is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn, fabric and garments. (Wikipedia.org.)

Geographic origin:
The name is from the region of Kashmir. The cashmere products of this area first attracted the attention of the European in the early 1800s when India was under the British Raj.

The goats reside predominantly in high plateaus of Asia with the most significant populations being found in India, Pakistan and the northwestern provinces of China, Tibet, Mongolia and Iran.
Many nations in that area rely on cashmere as a luxury product that is exportable for high profit.
