Patricia Z
As an artist Patricia loves creating beautiful one of a kind works of art. She also shares her gift by teaching others the techniques of gourd painting and decoration.
Patricia was recently persuaded to be filmed demonstrating her unique Gourd Batik(SM). The set of three technique based DVD's are due to be released this spring.
Gourd Batik-Colors Gone Wild
Gourd Batik is a resist technique using dried gourds which allows the layering of colors resulting in incredible depth of colors. This special layering technique not only gives a lustrous deep color, but the color does not fade like so many other gourd painting techniques. This leads to a long lasting work of art.
The gourd above is a hand-painted pumpkin gourd using the unique Gourd Batik (SM) process.
Craft Or Art Form?
According to Patricia everyone has creativity inside themselves. Working with gourds allows people to express their creativity.Though some may have developed their artistic skills to a higher level, she has simplified the Gourd Batik videos so everyone can excel.
As Patricia so often says, "A tree can be of many different types. How someone creates their picture on their gourd depends on how they see their world.
All trees have leaves and branches, but when you look at nature how many different ways and types of trees are there. So everyone has the opportunity to capture their view of the world, their tree, their vision."
Styles of Gourd Batik
Unlimited Possibliites
The beauty of Gourd Batik (SM) is it can be used in a number of artistic styles. Patricia's versatile styles make it easy to understand why so many of her painted gourds are in private collections. From the folk art styled red barn in spring to the intense colors and linear style reminiscent of early 1900's modernist French artists.
It is amazing a plant related to the familiar cucumber can be so beautiful when painted.

- Wow! Patricia's artistry is beyond belief. It is absolutely fantastic. Who would believe that you could take an old dried up gourd and turn it into a piece of priceless art.
Look at the 2nd gourd below. It looks like a priceless vase you would find in the most respected and upscale decorations shops.
Wow! That says it all.

- I have listened to Pat Z. talk about her creative endeavors, and the beauty she brings to us comes from a struggle. In the eye of the artist, the piece is never finished, and that is Pat's struggle. They are wonderful art.

Gourds, gourd crafts, gourd arts, gourd fun....
Besides all the vendors, including home made ice cream, there is a competition for gourd artists of all skills and ages. over 200 categories. I received ribbons of 6 of my 7 entries. 2 blue, 2 red, 2 white.
This was the debut of my "Gourd Batik Secrets" Dvd's. That was exciting. And my work was compared to the very collectible Rookwood Pottery for the third time. Wow!
