My review of this business
Your turn! Sound off here.
What would you tell your kids if you wanted them to make a difference in the world and get a job doing something that they love? You are absolutely forbidden to say it depends. Pick a side and defend it. I have been in the academia world for the last 8 years and I think it was the wrong decision. I think that I learned more in ten hours at an entrepreneurial company than I did in 3 years of business school.
Academia vs. Experience

Academia
Experience
Paul_DeJoe says:
So why don't we send all of our youth into jobs out of high school and let the employers figure it out? If the answer is Experience it seems silly to me that 250k in loans and debt and four years behind the experienced candidate. Outside of Wharton, Harvard, Kellogg etc... the elitist ... these secondary and tertiary universities and the MBAs they are offering are stealing money and running the best gag there is.
jsloss says:
Experience with academia? I think that's the best choice. Lots to learn from school and even more to learn from life.
AllanYoung says:
Experience rules. Of course, if anyone is going to rely on their experience to open doors, they must have a great track record of performance and excellence.
Paul_DeJoe says:
Of course that's your response you're going to respond to every blog in this arena and say it's wrong so that you can appear to be above another candidate and pacify the criteria of responding or interacting with other members at the same time. I appreciate your comment but I don't understand what it means. What's incorrect about my "sound off" is there a better? What's the correct sound off? If you did more than a two sentence reply with some more backbone I think I'd be more inclined to say I agree or didn't. It's weak.
pizzamancer says:
Experience will trump academia 100% of the time, but I believe the premise of your sound off here is wrong. I would not wish a job on anyone.

- Paul - Haven't been by in a few days. Interesting response there. Just a cursory check of my comments will quickly verify that you are sadly mistaken in your opinion. My intent was meant in no way to diminish your application.
Sadly, you missed the point of my sound off entirely. When I said that your premise was mistaken, I was referring to the root of your question. About jobs. Getting a better job is like drinking Starbucks to support the company.
Making a difference in the world is done by the movers in a society, not those who are just holding a job. Last I checked, saving the world wasn't a job title.
The people out there really making a difference, the men and women (like Seth and many others) who are actually out there doing it, are a far more effective force.

- Paul - I love the Academia vs. Experience argument. It's a worthwhile devate that isn't all that obvious even though I fall on the side of experience.
Have you completed your application already? If not, I encourage you to keep pushing until you've turned it in. It's worth a few hours of your time to get six months of unique adventure.
