The fragrant scent that is the perfume comes from the Latin word "through smoke". During the olden times, the scent coming from burning incense and herbs were widely used as part of religious ceremonies until the fragrance turned into an essential part of the lives of the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses.

Through the years, the scent of perfume has evolved into a major business where France became the center of the perfume industry. Refinements have been made with fragrances passing through various stages before it reaches the customers.

Today's perfume has three (3) main components: (1) scent which are basically extracted from flowers, citrus, wood, and spices; (2) fixative which stabilize the scent and make it last longer; and (3) solvent to maintain consistence for easy application and prevent bacteria from forming.

There are also several categories that are defined by how much scent is put into the product like (1) perfume extract considered to be the most expensive as it is the most concentrated; (2) eau de perfume; (3) eau de toilette or toilet perfume; (4) cologne; (5) lotion; (6) aftershave.

The price is determined by the amount of concentration of the perfume. As a general rule, the higher the concentration, the higher the price. Hence, colognes are considered to be less expensive than perfumes as they are less concentrated in scent.
