Money saving tips for your personal economic health

W
elcome to my money saving lens. Writing this lens was spurred by the current world economic situation. Rather than dwelling on what cannot be changed, my decision is to share knowledge that has saved hard earned dollars and encourage others to do the same.

Even if you have never had to budget, or thought of yourself as thrifty or a coupon clipper. The economy calls for rethinking that idea and reserving assets. It is now easier than ever to save with online rebate programs, instant cashback, click thru savings, promo codes and other methods. Choose the retailers that give you the most bang for your buck.

Find link and resources to reserve your cash in this lens. You are welcome to offer other money saving suggestions that have worked for you.

The motto is: It's not what you paid that matters...but what you did not!!

We now live in a time when no one has to sacrifice quality for price.

Whether you still hold a job or are trying to reserve assets until the next job is landed. Saving money for a rainy day is always the prudent thing to do. Like they say....who knows what tomorrow will bring?

We must spend to stimulate the economy, but spend wisely.

The greatest outcome would be that you use your surplus to help someone else in need in your family or community.

Donate to non profits or spend at websites that support the non-profit community.

Step your way to savings $$$

Saving money is worth the effort. Simple steps can lead to results. It takes small changes a little at a time to change habits. Which can have lifetime benefits to your financial bottom line. Start looking at coupons like you would a dollar bill. Would you toss a dollar in the trash?

Try a few ideas in this lens to see what works for you.

Lets start with the basics:

  • Check local newspaper or circulars like 'Red Plum' for savings coupons weekly. Cut out coupons you will need and save.

  • Sign up online at major retailers & manufacturers for their weekly ad to be sent to your email.

  • Open a no fee checking account. Compare interest checking accounts to fees charged. Is it really a good deal for you?

  • Buy quality, even high-end clothing, small housewares even furniture and new items at your neighborhood thrift shops. Ask how they run specials to get the best deals. Do your wallet good and a local charity. Return the favor by donating items you don't need and get a tax deduction. Best thrift store deals can be found during Dec 31st tax donation deadline. Remember renew, reuse, recycle.

  • Check your local phone books for the coupon section, then clip and save.

  • Pay with cash instead of credit cards OR use debits card that have a rewards program.

  • Don't forget to look for and use your AAA (Auto Club) membership, and other discounts.

  • Use Layaway instead of purchasing with a credit card.

  • Never grocery shop without a list or when hungry.

  • Don't shop at stores that don't have a sale.

  • Purchase savings cards for local merchants. Usually sold through fundraisers.

  • No matter how good the price, always look for quality to avoid repeat purchases.

  • Shop without the children or pets if possible, so you won't feel rushed to make a purchase or pressured into one by the kids.

  • TIP: The Internet is the greatest tool of the 21st century for price comparisons, even for major purchases. It saves time and gas, and most importantly your nerves.

For the persons that have to 'see and feel' merchandise before they purchase, see it first, then check the Internet for a better price. Use price comparison websites. Using the Internet can save taxes, shipping and offer rebates. If your local retailer will match prices and you want to support your local economy, that is fine.

    MAGIC JACK REALLY WORKS!

Cut the phone company hold on your wallet

EXTRA!!! I installed Magic Jack and cut my phone bill 50% $$$$$$. If you don't need a land line, you can save even more $$$$$! Just remember to register with Magic Jack for 911 services. EXTRA! Magic Jack will allow you to keep your phone number starting August 2010 for a small fee.

Call anywhere in the USA for free. Super low international rates, when needed. No monthly service fee. The call clarity is even better than my land line! NOTE: You will need some type of Internet service like DSL to use Magic Jack. Your PC must be on to make or receive calls with Magic Jack software.

It is as simple as 1,2,3!

    1. Plug the phone line into the Magic Jack.

    2. Plug the other end of the phone line into your telephone.

    3. Plug the Magic Jack into your USB port of your PC.

Follow the software prompts to register your Magic Jack and start calling! You will be assigned a Magic Jack phone number.

Read the facts about Magic Jack here

    Get Magic Jack today!!!

Magic Jack costs only $39.95 on their website and $34.99 at Radio Shack. Then pay only $19.99 a year for service. Or purchase 5 years for $69.99 from Magic Jack.

Two cons of Magic Jack I have discovered so far:

  • Magic Jack not compatible to send FAXES...Reason lost packets with Voice over IP

  • Workaround...Scan and email fax to recipients. Otherwise, keep fax connected to your land line and fax to local phone numbers, occasionally. Remember to watch the call or minute limits of your land line to stay on budget.

  • Magic Jack is not compatible with Home central alarm or fire systems for phone lines.

  • Workaround...First, Keep alarms connected to your land line. Get Basic rate or measured rate service from your current provider. Disconnect all unnecessary services like long distance, call packages, etc. You will still save a bundle.

Second, buy an inexpensive wireless phone for your Magic Jack and connect it to your PC. (Got my phone from Radio Shack) Make all outgoing calls from the Magic Jack line. You will still be able to receive phone calls on your land line phone number.

    Waste Not Want Not

Don't let dollars $$$ go down the drain

Great you purchased food items at low prices and stocked up. A large part of saving money is preventing waste. It is estimated that families throw away
15-20 % of the food they buy. Simply because food such as vegetables or leftovers are not stored properly in the refrigerator. And items in storage cabinets are not organized. Therefore, many items reach the expiration date before use.

I have used the 'Oso Fresh' food storage containers and have cut down on throwing away leftovers and vegetables tremendously. Food lasts longer in these containers. They are made with trace amounts of silver, which inhibits/slows bacteria growth.

Very helpful information. I was already doing most of these anyway (but I found a couple thing I'd missed :o) The exception being layaway; most stores have discontinued it much to my disappointment! Nice job - 5*
