Personal Trainers - Getting the Most Out of Your Certification 

Now that you've spent countless hours studying for exams and making your rounds at the gym, not to mention all of the time you've spent keeping in tip-top shape, it's time to get the most out of you certification.

First and foremost you need a plan. If you are like most personal trainers, you come out of the gate and work for a gym. Let's put some thought into this road. There are many great benefits to working for a gym. Access to awesome equipment, a steady stream of clients and minimal paperwork. But the major drawback of working for someone else is that your income is limited to the hours you put in. Unless you are managing a team of personal trainers, you won't be getting the most out of your certification.

In order for you to maximize your rewards for your expertise, you have to become your own boss. The possibility for personal trainers is limited to your imagination. Want to travel the world and get paid? Become an international presenter at fitness conferences all over the globe! The demand for great speakers is ever increasing.

Do you have a love for writing? Write a book! It takes time to put together a solid book but you are financially rewarded for the rest of your life. Every time someone buys a book you get paid. You can be training or playing beach volleyball and still be making money. Sounds good to me!

No one succeeds alone. Your success as a personal trainer is dependant on your ability to network. Attending fitness conferences and workshops will put you in contact with the greatest number of people in the industry. Trade business cards with everyone you speak to. Create a contact list so that you'll have their information at your fingertips. If your client needs a service outside of your scope, you can refer them to one of your contacts. Creating business relationships will do wonders for your business.

Organizing workshops is a fantastic way to optimize your hourly income. Instead of getting paid once you get paid dependant on the number of participants. For example, you can run a one hour bootcamp class. The class is $15 per person. With your winning personality we know you can attract way more but let's say you have ten people in the class. That's $150 an hour! With exposure to more people, you'll also increase the likelihood of maxing out your personal training hours. Being able to use your time effectively will give you the chance to increase your potential income.

Use all of the incredible skills you have to create an incredible career not a job. Being your own boss is very challenging but rewarding. Take stock of what you have to offer and figure out what path would best suit your lifestyle. Spend some time researching trends and writing out a business plan. It will keep you on track and allow you to visualize where you want to take your business. The sky is the limit. How far will you take it?
