Potty Training a Little Boy

Have You Potty Trained a Little Boy Using the Peter Potty?

My son is 19 months old and I am going to try to start potty training him using the Peter Potty. Some might say that he is to young to start potty training. When he grabbed his diaper the other day and said "potty", I took him straight to the bathroom and he pooped in the potty. Since he is telling me he needs to go I believe it's time to start potty training.

That night I put together the Peter Potty. It is a training urinal for little boys. When I got it as a gift at my baby shower I thought it was pretty cool. My husband even wishes he had his own urinal.

The Peter Potty is Great For Everyone!

Peter Potty is AdjustableThe Peter Potty is the first toddler urinal. I can start my son off right by teaching him to stand from the very beginning. He can be a big boy and go to the potty standing just like Daddy.

I also have a 6 year old daughter that has to share a bathroom with my son. The Peter Potty is going to be great for her because she won't have to accidentally sit in mess if my son happens to miss the toilet. He has his own urinal!

The Peter Potty will make it easier on me as well. If I were to teach him to use the toilet from the start we would have to use a stepping stool. With my son being so young he might miss trying to keep his balance then there would be a mess all over the toilet and floor for me to clean up. The Peter Potty will adjust to my son's height so we won't have to worry with a stool.

First Time Potty Training a Boy

The Potty Book - For BoysI have never had to potty train a little boy before. In fact I have never really been around boys before. Growing up most of my cousins where girls, I have only 1 sibling, my sister, and most of my friends had little girls. So this will be a learning experience for us all. I hear little boys are harder to train than little girls.

My daughter was potty trained before she turned 2. That is what I am going to try to shoot for with my son, but I know that boys are different than girls and each child is different. If it happens to take a little longer than what I thought I know it will be ok. He won't go to kindergarten still in diapers.

Am I potty training to early?

Second Thoughts

Peter Potty Toddler UrinalAfter putting together the Peter Potty I was going to dedicate the whole next day to potty training. A tip that I had heard before was to take the child to the restroom every 30 min. I set my alarm to go off every 30 min. just in case I got busy and forgot. The whole day (going to the bathroom every 30min.) he did not one time go in the potty even though he loved it every time I said "It's potty time." That just meant it was time to play with the new toy.

The Peter Potty has a tank that you fill with water and set it on top of the urinal. When the little boy is done you press a button on the tank and it rinses everything into a tray held in the bottom. My son thought it was great. He kept on pressing the button to make the water come. He was to busy playing to actually use it.

Using a WeeMan Potty Training Urinal

Potty Training Continued at Grandma's

WeeMan Potty Training UrinalMy "potty training" weekend is over and I have to go back to work. I guess you could say that over the "potty training" weekend my son went to the potty 1 time and spent the rest of the time getting familiar with it.

My husband's grandmother watches my son during the week while we work. She will continue to work with him on potty training. The only difference there is that she does not have a Peter Potty, but she does have a WeeMan Potty Training Urinal.

What makes the WeeMan Potty Training Urinal different from the Peter Potty is that the WeeMan Potty clips to the toilet. It hangs low enough for little boys and then flips over to empty into the toilet.

Toilet Time Targets

Tips For Keeping It In the Toilet

Toilet TargetsIf you are using the toilet to potty train a little boy make it fun! Add some targets to the water for them to try to aim at. Just make sure that the targets are safe to be flushed. You don't want to be sticking you hand in the toilet to get the targets after they have been used.

Some people have said that they use cereal like Cheerio's. Or you can buy toilet targets like in the picture, that are made from non-toxic biodegradable tissue paper. Using a target for them to aim at will help promote toilet training and will give him practice at ringing the toilet.

Pull-Ups vs. Training Pants

Pull Ups vs. Training PantsWhen I was potty training my daughter I preferred to training pants instead of Pull-Ups. When my daughter wet in a Pull-Up, she didn't care. It was like wearing a diaper to her. So I put her in training pants. Then she could feel it when she got wet and she did not like it. That taught her to go to the potty instead of in her pants.

If your child is in daycare they will probably say to keep them in Pull-Ups because it's easier for them to clean up. I was fortunate enough to have my family watch my children so never had to put them in daycare.

With my son I am going to skip the Pull-Ups and just use the training pants. It will also save on money. I won't have to buy Pull-Ups like I buy diapers. If an accident happens in the training pants I can wash them and reuse them.

Pull-Ups vs. Training Pants

Pros and Cons of Both

Do you like Pull-Ups or Training Pants? Why did you choose to use that method? Why do you not like the other?

Which do you use to potty train your child?

Pull-Ups

athomemomblog says:

I use Pull-ups with my oldest since he was born with a birth defect that means he has some fecal incontinence. Since it embarrasses him to mess up his pants and he really can't help it, we use Pull-ups. He can easily pull them down to pee and if he doesn't make it to the toilet on time, they contain the mess better than training pants.

theraggededge says:

Neither... with both my boys I removed their diaper, put the potty in the middle of the room and they trained themselves in a couple of days. Neither ever had an 'accident' and went straight into regular underwear. My daughter took months!

Training Pants

TheMotherSquid says:

I cloth diapered, so I use training pants, but I put a cloth insert in them, too, because it is really difficult to clean out poo from training pants!

TimeForPotty says:

Definitely training pants. Pull-ups are going to keep the child diaper dependent in my opinion because they won't have the shock of what it feels like to have an accident.

Nikki-Cheeks says:

I went pull ups the whole way with both my girls, I admit I wasn't so environmentally conscious then, so I just went with Easy. If I were to do it over again, I'd do training pants + knowing what I know now : )

Pull-Ups

The only time I like to use Pull-Ups while potty training is at night time. You don't know when they have to go if they are sleeping. Taking the child to the potty right before bed time will help night time accidents, but until they have the potty training down pat they won't wake up to use the potty.

I love the ideas that you offered in this wonderful lens. I really want to buy either the standing urinal for my son or the wee man one. I've never heard of either one before. Great job and thanks so much for sharing

Love that Peter Potty! I didn't have a boy so it wouldn't have helped us. My daycare actually helped with potty training by just not giving her a diaper and encouraging her to use a potty. We used the diapers at night for a while though!

We JUST potty trained both our boys, ages 4 and almost 3. I LOVE the idea of the Peter Potty Urinal . .. wish we had that down here! We actually just let the boys go outside. The little one, we left him naked (we live in a tropical country, works well!) and the older just got it when we said the diapers had run out. Both my boys are tall enough to pee right in the toilet, but there are some cool ideas here for littler boys!
