Amazing story. Loved this lens. I feel so fortunate -- My son, now 14, had a 90% hearing loss at age 2 1/2 that required surgery to fix apparent damage from multiple bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis. He could not form words due to not being able to hear and I took him to speech therapy 4 days a week for 2 years. Fortunately, the surgery brought him down to 10% hearing loss. Today he is a healthy (except for asthma!) 14-year-old who earns high honors and talks a mile a minute with no signs that he ever had a speech or hearing problem (unless I say, "Did you clean your bathroom?").

What was that you said? Delighted to hear all this and good for you.

My son is autistic and is in a special education class with only 10 students. A few years ago, he had 4 children in his class that had these implants. To think those little children had to go through so much with the surgery and therapy.

Thank you for sharing. Your story is inspirational!

Wow, thanks for the wonderful article. I'm a single mom living in Cape Town, with my two kids, 6 & 9. My little boy 6 was also born profoundly deaf and after more than a year and a half of raising funds I could afford to give him one implant, I will never regret all the hard work and effort and time it took to raise those funds if I see him now. Sad part is that he could now get an upgrade but unfortunately it it just too expensive. I am mostly blaming myself for not been able to give him the upgrade, but stories like yours, just give me the hope that one day we will be able to do it. You have a beautiful family, your kids are stunning. I admire you and your story is one of hope, joy and love. Best of luck for the future from a warm and sunny Cape Town.
  • Spook Feb 10, 2012 @ 7:01 am | delete
Delighted to hear from you and thanks for the visit. I wouldn't blame yourself for anything, in my opinion you have done an unbelievably marvellous job and I take my hat off to you. Don't worry, things will work out for you. Sometimes things work in funny ways. For example your son at six years old and getting the upgrade, it's too easy for him to take off and throw away when he is having a tantrum, which most kids do. Hang in there and once again, thank you.

It always astonishes me how hard it is to get help when you need it. Your challenges were really something. God bless the tobacco farmers that worked so hard to help you! Your family is GORGEOUS! With your talent, wit and humor it was not only a blessing to you to get your implant, free or otherwise, but also a blessing to all of us. Thank you!

What a really marvelous lens. You have to be a very kind and special person to have all that good luck/karma or whatever you want to call it come your way with so many people always wanting to help you. That tells me that you were always kind and loving to others as well. Thank you, too, for your nice comments on my lens today about how I became a writer but I am awed at how you overcame such heightened odds. I'm so glad this worked for you. You have such a beautiful wife and children, all look happy and you all look like you love each other very much. One of my favorite quotes was said by the late Audrey Hepburn. She said, "Nothing is really impossible. The word alone says I'm Possible."

This story should be required reading for everyone! Thank you for sharing it. I feel bad that anyone would ever make you feel less than anyone else. The thought of not being able to hear is unimaginable to me. I would most miss the sounds of nature and music. Shirley Bassey gave me chills, by the way. I haven't heard her in years.

  • Norma_Budden Apr 23, 2010 @ 9:09 pm | delete
You certainly had a journey but it's wonderful that you were able to come to terms with the total deafness you experienced and finally got your miracle, in terms of hearing the sounds around you even if they don't come in as clearly as you would like. Technology is amazing but it's equally wonderful when people can realize the blessings they have experienced in the face of adversity.

Congrats again, Purple Squid. I'll add this to your feature later but, for now, I think you'll want to visit: http://www.squidoo.com/luvmyludwigs-purple-stars

A lovely account of a difficult handicap with good outcome. The cochlear implant was the invention of an AUSTRALIAN professor and aussies were the first to get them. Pity you didn't come here as it would have been cheaper and probably quicker for you. We are always left out of the credit stakes when our inventions are taken over and credits given elsewhere. Dosn't detract from the quality of the lens so top marks

I've tried twice now to comment on the poll question but got an "error on page" message both times. I think most people cannot afford the implant and would MUCH rather see taxes go to provide necessary health care than be frittered away on already wealthy bankers who have mismanaged their banks into the ground.

Thanks for your kind comment on my homelessness lens. :))

Kevin, I added a lengthy comment in the duel that I don't know if it 'took' or not, but in short...this is an inspiring story. Not only for your medical story, but I was taken strongly by your family, and I am calling my son right after this.

My son is looking into getting something like or maybe this exact thing...I'm not sure. He has a brain tumor- that's been "killed" with radiation but it has caused him to go deaf in one ear. He was just telling me about it and then I saw this lens!!! I am very happy for you. Your story is inspirational and your kids are beautiful!

Kevin... I've just published my 2nd lens and It's about Inspiration and Determination. I've lensrolled this lens into it and will be displaying it as one of the featured lens. I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to do the featuring as the featured lens module only allows 5 at a time. I could rotate them on alternate months or perhaps do a plexi contest---Hey that's it... when I update I will do that!
All the best to you! BTW, I'm thankful that I could really enjoy Shirley Bassey with my hearing aid. I loved that version and I love her... Fantastic!

Kevin I am sharing this lens w/my family and friends in hopes it will foster some understanding of deafness. Mine hearing continues to get worse. Among my family and some friends, there seems to be an unwillingness to understand that my hearing aid helps, but it is still difficult for me to fully understand a conversation. You have a beautiful family and this is a tremendous lens full of inspiration. I have plans to begin a blog of inspirational human interest stories and this one, with your permission, will be a part of it! 5 bright stars and a favorite.

Wow. Your lens held me spell-bound. I had to read every word. Thank you for sharing your story. My Grandmom and Granddad were both deaf and mute but way before implants were available. BTW, a late happy birthday! Bear hugs, Frankster aka Bearmeister aka Cat-Woman

Wonderful story, and I learned a lot! I particularly enjoyed the part about becoming "mates" with your son and hearing your child cry. That's precious. And thanks for the birthday wishes!

Wow, a super story. I like how you write, it is so genuine. Congratulations on getting your hearing back, too bad it took so long, but that probably makes you appreciate it all the more. It just goes to show that if you want something badly enough, and work hard enough, it can be done!

WOW what a great story! I know what you mean about accepting charity (not knowing your full story) however I do believe God places people into your life for a reason and you have to make the choices...you chose not to take up the charity(gift?) and through the ensuing time you endured many other experiences, maybe this was the lesson to be learned..I am so happy for you that you got your wish of hearing, I can't magin not having that wonderful part of our lives(we take that for granted)
Thank You for sharing your story and also for stopping by "my family crest" lens....5*

It is my hope that medical technology will one day advance to the point where hearing impairment will simply be a thing of the past. Everyone should be able to live life without missing out on anything. Wonderful lens with a heart-felt 5 stars from me.
