When you were very young you did not know how to use the toilet properly. You didn't even know which room of the house the toilet was in for that matter! You should remember this when you scold your pup for using the carpet as a toilet and bear in mind that house training your dog is down to you. House training should be taken step by step over a long period of time and it may require your total attention too.
First of all, as he cannot speak, you have to be able to read the signals your dog gives you when he needs to go to the toilet. All too often people think their dog will bark and sometimes dogs actually do, but more often than not if you miss his signal you are likely to find "little accidents" all around the house.
Although dog house training consists of just a few simple steps, it can be time consuming. Try putting a sheet of newspaper by the door and if you spot him doing one of his "accidents" in your home, quickly lift him up and pop him onto the newspaper. He will soon catch on to the fact that this is the place to have such accidents if you are not around when he needs to go.
When your dog is really young you should take him outside every hour so he can go to the toilet. As he gets older, he will become restless and start sniffing around (usually finding a place to have his accident) when he needs to go out. This is the time to notice the signals he is giving you and take him outside. At this point try saying something like "come on, do your toilets". Once done, praise him and give him lots of affection so he knows he has done something you are pleased about. This will teach him that the carpet is not the right place and that you are much happier when he does his toilets outside, even if you do have to scoop it up and put it in the bin! He will soon be literally asking you to go out in whatever way he feels will best attract your attention.
There are numerous methods and routines you can use when house training your dog and many of them can be found in books specifically about this subject. Remember, he cannot be expected to know that outside is good straight away - he has to learn and you are his teacher.
