How to write your own book....

Anyone can do it with Lulu print on demand books!

I have spoken with friends about writing books, and with colleagues about publishing children's work. I have published poetry, music, tuition materials, MP3s of my music and an analytical book (On Wenlock Edge: 100 Years On). I even managed a CD Rom. The fact is anyone can do it! It is fun to do and the printed results are really good. Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • Choose a topic you know and love - this bit is a little like writing a squidoo lens!
  • Be organised. Set yourself some time when you can plan your chapters.
  • Be passionate. Write from the heart, whether it is poetry, fact or fiction.
  • Write to entertain rather than educate, keep your readers interest with short sentences, every day language, dynamic writing and easy paragraphs.
  • You can incorporate illustrations and photos into your text with Lulu, but remember colour is a lot more expensive to produce than black and white!
  • Don't plagiarize. If you quote, acknowledge it. Acknowledge photos and seek legal permission for anything under copyright - especially music examples!
  • When you are ready, create your lulu account, you can then upload your word document and from there follow the steps.
  • Lulu steps are easy to follow, their explanations are not! So do not go there unless you are thinking of buying the distribution pack; then there are legal niceties you will need to know!
  • You can design a cover for your book using the standard Lulu themes, or you can be ambitious and design your own as I do. it is pretty easy and I have a friend who is a wonderful artist and illustrator.
  • Children's work is often nicer when they also design their own covers using their own drawings! You can do this with Lulu.
  • Once you have gone through all this, you can price your book, decide on its availability etc. The choice is yours.... why not try?

Why become an online book publisher?

The lowdown on publishing your own books....

Why would you want to be publishing your own books? The advantage of conventional publication is obvious; all the stress of marketing and promotion is taken off your shoulders, no design problems, no networking, no financial outlay. If you are lucky the publisher will give you an advance on royalties and then you sit back and count the pennies roll in....

Except.... wait a minute! In the competitive market we now have an unknown author has to have so much persistence and drive to get published. Even Harry Potter had a trail of rejection slips! Why not turn all that letter writing, waiting, networking and anguish into a bigger royalty? You are doing it anyway trying to promote your work to a publisher in a contracting market full of ghost-written books with celebrity front men!

Certainly in poetry you are wasting your time looking for a big publisher unless you are either already famous or a respected literature professor. Looking for book publishers online can be depressing - they charge hundreds of dollars and this is indeed vanity publishing at its most exploitative.

Poetry book publishing is a grey area too. Many small magazines publish poetry books as a sideline, but they don't really market your work. My first publisher didn't even read the manuscript I sent. There were two very silly mistakes I had missed in the original copy and he didn't even spot them, they went through to proof! I am not talking little typos here, but glaring errors in the title of a poem! So, you have to do everything yourself and anyway using Lulu saved on the book publishing costs bigtime....

Self publishing childrens books, poetry, recipe books, personal histories and coffee table volumes is easy with print on demand printers hiring themselves out to firms like Lulu. It is free until you buy and DRM (digital rights management) is available on e-books for a small fee. Publishing your own books gives you huge editorial control. You control not just fonts and font sizes, but illustrations, layout and cover. The books you sell give you a much improved royalty rate and an ISBN allows access to Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Many on-line services will be advertising your book within weeks.

The big disadvantage is the time you will certainly have to spend trying to sell your wares. Give too much away and people don't need to buy, give too little and you are asking them to invest in the unknown. There is also the disadvantage that the conventional writing fraternity get a bit sniffy about what they call "vanity publishing" and will put you down without bothering even to read; but who said they would accept you anyway? You are after all a rival! Some of the greatest writers of all time were self-published in the first instance, especially in the field of poetry.

If I were to write a potential best-seller - a Harry Potter of the future, say - I think I would be inclined to try the conventional route first, but for my poetry and music books the niche is a small one. For now, I will stick with Lulu.

New Books Published by Photahsiamirabel

Vaughan Williams Book is now available in the US and Canada, Tadpole's Illustrated also now available for the first time....

On Wenlock Edge 100 Years On
My book is now available although I am still waiting to receive the UK and European licence on the Edwin Ashdown quotes, everything else is ready including the all important go ahead from Boosey and Hawkes, copyright holders for the music of On Wenlock Edge itself! Visit the link below to browse or buy.
On Wenlock Edge - 100 Years On
Vaughan Williams is a favourite composer of mine. My introduction to his music came at the age of eight when I sat at my father's feet spellbound by the shivery sounds of the Tallis Fantasia. This book is my own study of the songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was first written in 1979 and I am publishing it celebrate the centennial of the first performance of Vaughan Williams' masterpiece, On Wenlock Edge, in the Aeolian Hall, London, by tenor Gervase Elwes and the Schwiller Quartet with Frederick Kiddle (piano) 0n 15th November 1909. lts reception was mixed at the time as it was so new and impressionistic for a world used to Stanford, Parry and the great German tradition. I hope music lovers will be with me in spirit in my celebration of a truly wonderful piece of music and if you have not yet made its acquaintance that this book might stir your interest in listening to or performing it.
Tadpole's Illustrated - the Immortal Works now available!
Tadpole and Co were active in the mid 1980s on the alternative comedy scene in Britain. They performed with such greats as Jo Brand and Henry Normal. This book is a reissue of Tadpole's Illustrated, first published in 1986 for sale at gigs. Illustrations are by Colin Mason (aka Oliver Tadpoles) and poems by Oliver and Laetitia Tadpole. Tadpole and Co were never PC - they always refused to be sheeple - but were not quite offensive enough to be taken seriously. Billed by Nick Toczek as the "Essence of English Eccentricity" their ultimate eccentric claim to fame was the sinking of the Titanic in music - using guitar, saxophone and congas - they followed this with the historic eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed Herculaneum - it was heroic, amazing, unbelievably silly and great fun. It is impossible to convey such epics without the medium of film, but on a smaller scale the Immortal Verse survives to this day. Here in this lavishly illustrated A4 slim volume are some of the immortal rhymes (and some of the immoral ones too).

Publishing a childrens book?

Are you a second J.K.Rowling?

We all know how successful Harry Potter has become, yet getting that first book published was not easy even for J.K.Rowling! Publishing a children's book is difficult because there is so much competition. Anyone who can write or illustrate presumes they can get a children's book published, yet it is not easy to get the attention of publishers even if you have a fantastic idea to appeal to the imagination of children! Publishing books online gives you a chance to test the market, or simply copyright your work in a more readable form for an agent. Perhaps you are a teacher wanting to publish stories by your class? This is the sort of thing that would require a limited run. Print on demand publishing seems made for schools and project work!

Hi, I'm so curious about your music. Are you aware that you (like me) are suffering from the Lulu-Amazon bug? Lulu wrote me to say Amazon had decided to stock my book (The Triangle Jewish Chorale Songbook - but when you find it at Amazon (unless there is a private vendor) it says the same thing it says on your Lulu books here:

"Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

which is an awful message for Amazon to be giving out. It would maybe be better for us if our stuff weren't listed at Amazon at all! What do you think? I don't think I'll know if you respond here, could you contact me through my profile? Thanks!

Thank you! It was great to get such positive feedback as making the videos is just a fun hobby to me. I have just come back from Canada and set up my page while I was there, so this is a nice thing to come back to! I will check out your pics too when I am a little less jet lagged!
    All best wishes to you!

I see the pictures of places in England...I love Glastonbury and I've posted some pictures I took in England on my lenses. I usually go once a year in May and my friend who lives in Weston-Super-Mare visits me three times a year. I'm especially fond of St. Ives and Dartmoor.

A Whisper Of The Romantic In The Eye Of God

Inspirational Poetry....

A Whisper of the Romantic in the Eye of God

Amazon Price: $16.90 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

Why is it worth spotlighting? A dear friend in the States told me "Lisa Gabriel is a poet's poet". The poems here draw on my life and soul and I hope people find them uplifting. I like to explore language, form and rhyme in both familiar and unique ways. As a poet I respond to what I see and experience and as a musician I try to make a memorable sound. As a fan of Dylan Thomas, King of Poets, but not in any way a plagiarist, I try to show my love for the music of words in these pages....

I hope you will explore my book through the medium of Google Book Search and that you might purchase a copy of your own to read and experience the play of light in those quiet moments between dusk and dawn.
