New Guitar Music For Beginners

Why did I write this book of folk tunes for guitar and flute? Well, firstly I love the tunes. It is a collection of traditional songs for guitar and flute. Many years ago one of my favourite occupations was to play and sing in sessions. Then life got in the way. When I hear folk tunes it brings back those days and many memories of singing and playing - and I just love the combination of classical guitar and flute!

The level of ability within the arrangements is from pre-grade 1 up to grade 3. There are guest parts for drums, recorder and cor anglais on individual carols (and all have a single note melody part which is transferable to other instruments). Fonts are large with note name noteheads and TAB. "Songs of the Reef has a sea theme, led by the Octopus on the cover. Many thanks to Colin Mason, for the wonderful purple Octopus who even holds his guitar correctly! I call these Octo-Pieces because they explore octaves! Very young children often learn music happily through note names and Kodaly hand signals, coming to notation later. At this point the guitar offers bewildering choices. This was written as a fun way of getting children used to high and low versions of the same note! Song of the Reef contains easy to read large notation with note name noteheads. I wanted to produce an attractive book for young guitarists at an early stage of reading and playing. The pieces are from grade 1 to grade 3 level. In the later pieces, higher notes and harmonics are added and special effects and dynamics are explored. I know my pupils like these pieces, my hope is that they will become a firm favourite with young guitarists of all ages, from 6-106!"

This book contains all the six string guitar parts for Band in a Jam which aims to encourage improvising in a band context. (This was written for KS2 and KS3 rock bands with orchestral parts added and is suitable also for guitar projects and class bands). This book contains all the parts for the guitars. Beginner parts have note names in the noteheads and stave size is larger to facilitate reading. Harder parts may also have TAB versions. Scales for jamming are given in easy, first position and higher position forms with notation and TAB. Each scale has a corresponding fretboard diagram showing most of the notes in the range of acoustic guitar. This is a very visual book, intended to be useful to all readers. A whole fretboard view of each scale (in diagram form with notenames) is also given for the more adventurous player. For the last tune only there are also suggested arpeggio patterns for tapping. These are in music, TAB and whole fretboard diagram form.
