Wedding photography is within the reach ofmany amateurs, however never underestimate what isrequired. Wedding photography is different than studio so the equipment has to be right for each individual situation. Whether you are already a professional or a competent amateur, it doesn't matter, I'll show you how you can literally transform your approach to wedding photography overnight. Most amateur wedding photographers and even some professionals will benefit from the  tips on this site. After all, the methods for traditional wedding photography are relatively simple as they merely involve established  poses during and after the wedding ceremony. The photojournalistic approach was developedas a direct response to the rather static - some sayboring aspect of traditional weddingphotography. Whereas traditional wedding photographyrequires the bride and groom, and even their family andfriends, to pose for the camera, the photojournalistic approachtakes on a more spontaneousstyle. These days, a wedding photographer issupposed to capture important moments of the wedding. Pre-celebrationposes include the bride standing beside her wedding gown, thegroom displaying the wedding rings, the bride being assisted byher maid/maiden of honor and /or her familymembers. You will be free to exercise your creativityon the images as long as you capture the moments thatmatter, the moments that will define thewedding. When I was asked whether I would shoot their wedding digitally or on film, I answered that that was their choice and showed them the results of my work from both cameras side by side. My personal opinion regarding cameras is that most mid-range and top end digital SLRs are more than capable of providing you with the basic tool to photograph a wedding. Most keen amateur photographers come across this circumstance at some stage in their lives, and many will choose to be the wedding photographer.

The best way, and the only real way to fully prepare yourself, is to assist a professional wedding photographer to shoot several weddings. You may not even take a photo for your first several weddings, but you will undoubtedly learn a great deal. Photographers with more editorialexperience often feel more comfortable with "speedlight" TTL flashesdue to their light weight and speed of setup/takedown. Studio flasheshave the advantage of significantly more lighting power and manyoptions for light modifications such as softboxes, snoots, andbarn-doors. For mypersonal wedding photography, TTL flashes' quick setup and lack ofneed for extension cords or electrical outlets have proven to be a fargreater advantage. With either studio strobes or speedlights, you will need lightstands and light modifying devices for each flash. Small TTL speedlight flashes can be mounted on just aboutanything, but most photographers find that investing in a set ofsturdy light stands is a worthwhile investment. However, they are not necessary and manyphotographers successfully rely on optical flash triggers or infrareddevices that allow the duration of remote flashes to be controlled by thecamera body's through-the-lens flash metering system. However, a hand-held flash meter can bevaluable when setting up flashes for formal portraits. It is easy tostand in front of the flashes with a light meter in one hand and aradio slave trigger in the other. You quickly get an accurate idea ofexposure and ratios among the different flashes you are using. Givenhow small and inexpensive a flash meter is, it is wise to make one apart of your wedding photography kit.

I don't want to talk right now about what you need to know to photograph a wedding successfully because that subject is not one essay. I am not saying that all amateur photographers shouldn't accept the opportunity to photograph a wedding for friends. We consider an invitation to photograph a wedding tobe both an awesome responsibility and a wonderful creativeopportunity. I photograph a wedding the same way I would photograph a news or sports event: I tell the story of the day with photographs.
