A Closer Look At Eczema and Skin Rashes
Eczema and dermatitis are interchangeable words derived from old Greek and Latin basically mean: "inflammation of the skin". It's uncomfortable and irritating, but it's not life-threatening and it's not contagious, but it can be very effectively managed and often avoided.
Eczema (Dermatitis)
Atopic eczema or dermatitis may occur at any age. Dermatitis usually occurs in people who have other allergic problems such as asthma and hay fever. Often these conditions run within families with a parent, child or sibling also affected.
What is the cause of eczema or dermatitis?
The cause of eczema (atopic dermatitis) is unknown. It is considered a genetic disease. In general, it is a chronic recurring rash that seem to occur in the drier, colder months. Also, it is thought to arise because of environmental factors including skin irritants, the weather, temperature and other non-specific triggers. It arises from interplay of multiple genes with external environmental factors. Believe it or not, but even psychological stresses can provoke or aggravate it.
How do you recognize eczema?
Most people have inflamed red areas, sometimes flaking skin, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding. In between flare-ups, the skin may appear normal or suffer from chronic dryness of skin, thickened and itchy areas. So eczema can affect you both in terms of how you look and how your skin feels -- tight, itchy discomfort, and you can have trouble sitting.
Eczema can sometimes hide in certain places: people can have it on their scalp, hands, or just on the feet. Sometimes dermatologist have found that psoriasis can even involve areas that aren't seen, such as in the underarm or in the groin area. Don't be afraid to tell the doctor "where" on your body this is bothering you. Don't hold back! You need to communicate with your doctor.
Always remember, that If you have a question about how to use your prescribed medication, if you didn't understand what the dermatologist told you or they didn't communicate it to you effectively, you need to ask questions.

Maintain Hydration With A Moisture Cream
Deeply moisturizes dry skin with light and non-greasy cream. Experts agree that hydration is critically important for eczema, dermatitis or dry skin. But for those with sensitive skin, this can be a difficult time as many moisturizers can irritate. Too many people rely on trial and error to find a a suitable moisturizer. Incredibly, there are no FDA regulations governing the use of the phrase "hypoallergenic" or "sensitive" anybody can use this on the label regardless of formulation.
Remember, the objective is to hydrate the skin, you don't need colors or perfume to do that.
Gently Cleanse Your Skin
Try to gently cleanse the irritated area with a wash product that is soap free, sting free, free of color or perfumes and harsh parabens; without SLS or SLES. Often washes and cleansers are very harsh when it come to sensitive skin or eczema, many everyday products can be loaded with potential irritants. SLS or SLES is the most common irritant -- this is the ingredient that creates the foam or bubbles in cleansers or washes. There are 5 types of parabens commonly used:
- Methylparabens
- Ethylparabens
- Propylparabens
- Butylparabens
- isoparabens
"... traumatized or eczematized skin is more readily sensitized by Parabens " (Fisher A.A., The Parabens Paradox)
Use a cleanser that gently cleanses without stripping away natural moisture and without leaving skin feeling 'tight'.
Common irritants often labeled simply as "Fragrance" or "Perfume" include: Wood tars, Sandalwood oil, Benzyl alcohol, Benzyl salicylate, Cinnamic alcohol, Oak moss, Musk ambrette, and Eugenol Geraniol.
"Skin exposure to fragrance is known to cause perfume contact allergy and eczema .."
