Top three tips to start playing!
The essential goal in ping pong, which I'm sure you've noticed, is hitting the ball over the net and making it land on your opponents side of the table. There are two basic ways to win the point. Either, your opponent commits an error, causing the ball to dive into the net or sail long off the end of the table, or, you're able to hit a winner causing the ball to hit their side without them hitting it back.
Getting the point started is a little different. When you're opponent is serving, it's just like any other shot, simply hit the ball over the net onto their side. However, when it's your serve, the fall must strike your side of the table FIRST before going on over to theirs. Remember, you must always wait for the ball to hit the table, unlike tennis, you cannot volley and take shots out of the air.
That's the basics of ping pong!
Now that we have that established, there is a matter of the rules. Some people play with different rules. I find that the most common players, play their games to the first to 21 points, win by two, with players switching serve every five points. In more official settings, players will play the best of three sets, each to 11, win by two. Switching server every two points.
The rules you play is mostly up to you and your opponent. Some people play where the ball must be six inches out of hand on serve, while others don't. All that matters is that you have fun!
