A Pirate of a Day

Set sail and stiffen mini sea legs with Pirate crafts and high sea adventures. Plunder a whole Pirate day full of learning activities, Pirate printable coloring pages, treasure hunts, recipes and fun projects for your toddler, who will eagerly say "Aye, Aye, Captain!"

A Pirate birthday party and "talk like a Pirate day" is fun, but creating an entire themed Pirate day is enjoyable for the whole family and not limited to once a year. Just make sure that you go completely "overboard" and keep the fun going!

So let's weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen. Arggg :-)

Pirate Costumes

Gather your garb and gear...

The adventure begins with full Pirate costumes for everyone in your family - yes, even Mommy and Daddy! Jackets, hats, eye patches, and who wants a pegged-leg? Keep extra garb on hand in a chest to use again on your next Pirate day...

You can opt to create your own costumes and make that part of your crafting activities for your Pirate day. Easy projects such as newspaper hats are fun for your toddler.

Pirate Sayings and Phrases

Study traditional Pirate phrases, sayings and words together with your kids before your adventure, in order to have authentic conversations throughout your Pirate day. Simple phrases such as "Ahoy, Matey" and "Heave, ho" are easily learned by your toddler and make the adventure far more entertaining.

Use these guides below to write down your favorite Pirate phrases to keep on hand...

Get Ready to Set sail

Every Captain needs a ship for his or her Pirate crew. You can extend the ship-building activities by starting from scratch with cardboard boxes. First cut out the windows before your children receives the boxes to decorate. Use thin wooden craft dowels and old sheets or construction paper for sails. Your toddler can decorate the ship with cut out shapes, crayons, and foam pieces.

Another option is to purchase an inflatable pirate ship to get sailing quickly.

Pirate-themed Recipe Guide

A little extra Pirate booty...

Grocery Store Scavenger Hunt
If you're bold, go to the store in costume and test out your new phrases. :-)
You'll need to create ingredient lists with check boxes so the kids can cross off each item as they find them. Bananas, chicken, and seafood are easy Pirate finds, but you may need a few extra ingredients for these fun recipes:

Blue Jello Ocean Scene
Cook a box of blue Jell-o according to package directions, and pour into a large flat dish. Add jelly beans to portray rocks at the bottom of the ocean and place in the fridge. Before the jello completely sets, include a handful of gummy fish and sharks. Easy and edible ocean scene!
South Seas Chicken & Bananas
Coconut flavored and corn flake battered chicken and bananas - for tropical Pirate flair.
Pirate ship deli sandwich
Mini deli subs created to look like Pirate ships.
Colorful Veggie Coins
Healthy and beautiful dish of coin veggies.
Skull Cupcakes
Cupcakes made to look like skulls...

Pirate Puzzles

While you are preparing the grub, a quiet sit-down activity like piecing together a puzzle might be necessary. How about these ones?

Pirate Treasure Hunt

Toddlers love to have scavenger hunts!

You can either tear a brown paper bag into a treasure map, or print one out: Printable Pirate Treasure Map.

Label each place on the map as a part of your home (such as a skull mountain can be your living room). Hide treasure in relation to where the x would be on the map. On the printable treasure map above, the x is on an island, where you could turn that into the bedroom and hide a treasure box under the bed.

To keep the hunt adventurous hide random things, such as plastic gold coins and mini treats, around your whole home so there's plenty of things to find along the way to the treasure box. Give your little one a pouch to collect the small items in.
