The Plasma TV Technologies

Plasma TV is a term that's being bandied about frequently in the market, many people are still confused as to what plasma TV is all about. If you're one of them, here's what you should know to prevent you from making an uninformed purchase in the future.

plasma TV sets have only been introduced to the market in the 1990's, making any TV set manufactured before that decade is more likely a CRT TV set.

Whats the Best in Plasma TV?

The screen in a plasma TV is made up of array of pixels, and each individual pixel contains a gaseous substance. The pixels receive charge from a set of electrodes producing photons, giving away ultraviolet light. The light particles generated fall on the pixel wall which is coated with phosphor. When you view the same channel for a long time, or play the same game on your Plasma TV for long hours, the phosphor on the pixel wall may age more in certain areas and start to produce lights of less intensity. At times, with continued lights from the phosphor, the screen is liable to get burn-in, leaving a shadow of an image on the screen. To avoid plasma TV burn-in, you will have to use your plasma TV in a balanced way and avoid leaving the same TV channel or playing the same game for many hours in a row.

For a plasma TV set to show an image, a current of electricity must first pass through the plasma TV set's screen. This will cause the plasma substance inside the pixels to react and cast off ultraviolet rays. Each pixel will glow or dim appropriately to form a perfectly vivid image.

Projection TV or Plasma TV

Plasma TV can display images that make use of either standard or HDTV format. This is an advantage that you can't expect to enjoy with a CRT TV set. Plasma TV can also display images straight from home-recorded videos. Lastly, a plasma TV set can not only serve as a television set but as a computer monitor as well if you so wish.

Plasma TVs provide high-resolution images. The image quality of plasma TVs is much sharper and clearer than tube TVs. Because of this, plasma TVs can accommodate high-definition HDTV signals, as well as DTV, and other formats.

Plasma TVs are completely flat. Not only are they attractive and modern, but there is no distortion from curvature, which can be a problem with tube TV screens.

Plasma TVs are lifelike. The picture you get from a plasma TV is the clearest picture around, and there is such a sense of depth, the image almost seems three-dimensional.

Whats the Best LCD TV

Liquid crystal displays or LCD's are the new craze in television technology. They are light in weight and slime as your child's school note book. You can hang them like a picture frame or even place them on a stand. They produce crystal clear images and make even the most boring documentaries interesting to watch. Are you ready to get one? Before you go out and buy one. You should do your research this is not your parents CRT TV which works off of a light bulb there is lots of sophisticated technology involved in LCD TVs.

In an LCD TV or "transmissive" display, a light source shines through a panel of liquid crystals in order to display an image. A white diffusion panel behind the LCD redirects and scatters the light evenly to provide a more uniform image than most competing technologies.

The LCD face consists of two transparent layers which polarize a liquid crystal layer sandwiched in between. The front layer of glass is etched with a grid pattern on the inside surface to form a template for the liquid crystals. Liquid crystals are rod shaped molecules that bend light in response to an electric current; the crystals align so that no light can pass through. Each crystal acts like a camera's shutter, either blocking light or allowing it to pass through. A pattern of transparent or dark crystals forms the image. This same technology has been around for a while, even in such unsophisticated items as digital watches.

Liquid crystal displays have been around for a long time your VCR clock, microwave display, the clock in your room and so on. The LCD has a great advantage it has low power consumption and can be made into almost any shape, hens the picture frame LCD TV. LCD monitors have an edge over other monitors as they have better resolution and sleek design. Due to the liquid crystal display technology, an LCD monitor can produce 16.7 million colors, which means, the tiniest of hues can be detected. LCD monitors are sleekly built, so they occupy less space on the table.

LCD TV monitors are a combination of monitors used for computers and a normal television. They have a TV tuner built into them, which can allow them to function as both. They also have audio visual inputs, which can allow speakers and even woofers to be attached.

LCD TVs use an "active matrix" LCD; the most advanced type of LCD. The active matrix design is based on TFT, or thin film transistors. These are tiny switching transistors and capacitors that are arranged in a matrix on a glass substrate, they switch the LCD pixels on and off. In a color TV's LCD, each color pixel is created by three sub-pixels with red, green, and blue color filters.

LCD TV Vs Plasma DLP

One of the biggest challenges for LCD TV manufacturers has been speeding up the pixel response time, (how fast an individual pixel's color can change without blurring) so that fast moving images don't exhibit motion lag or "ghosting". This is especially critical for larger-screen LCD TVs, or for LCD TVs on which much of the viewing will be HDTV, or DVD movies.

LCD TV monitors work on the principle of blocking unwanted colors from the white spectrum. Their screens have a large number of pixels, each of which twist and turn at appropriate angles to produce an image. The pixels are illuminated by a thin lamp or a projector LCD. Due to this, the LCD TV monitors can be designed very compactly. They also offer great viewing angles. Some LCD TV monitors can also produce good quality images when viewed at an angle as obtuse as 170 degrees.

LCD TV monitors also have non glare screens. This makes them easy on the eyes, even when viewed very closely. Also, they are not affected by light falling on them. Even in a bright room, the quality of image on an LCD monitor will be as crisp as in a dark room.

Plasma TV Vs LCD TV The Comparision

The Below discussion makes it clear that both Plasma and LCD televisions are market rulers with their own sets of successful features. One must consider his or her requirements for purchasing a television set
  1. Making : Let's get technical. Plasma screen TVs use a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells which are charged by electrical voltage in order to make the picture. LCD screens are made up of liquid crystals sandwiched together between two glass plates.
  2. Picture Quality : When it comes to which type of TV screen is sharper and shows more detail, plasma TVs have a slight edge over LCD TVs, though LCD TVs are catching up.

Plasma TVs are also slightly better when it comes to viewing angle - how far you can sit to one side of a TV screen before picture quality is affected.
  3. Screen life: is the number of hours a TV provides before the picture begins to fade. Plasma TVs have a screen life of about 30,000 to 60,00 hours, depending on the make and model, while LCD TV's have a screen life of 60,000 hours or more.

Plasma TVs are also subject to "burn in." This occurs when a TV displays a still image long enough for a ghost of that image to be burned into the screen. LCD TVs do not have this problem.
  4. Both plasma and LCD TVs display HD (high definition) signals for a sharper, more three dimensional picture. LCD TVs, however, have a slightly higher resolution (more screen pixels) then plasma TVs.
  5. Video games : Plasma and LCD TVs are both great for video gaming, however because of plasma TV's tendency toward screen burn in, an LCD TV is the better choice if you play a lot of video games.
  6. Portability : LCD TVs are thinner and lighter than plasma TVs, making them easier to move and easier to mount on a wall
  7. Response Time : Generally speaking if you are watching content with high speed scenes a plasma TV will offer an advantage versus LCD TV. This is because its response time is lower. This puts the Plasma TV right on top for sports, and games. If you watch fast moving scenes as sports on a LCD TV, you will see a blur around the edges of the moving objects. Note however that if you use to play games a lot of time, a plasma TV is not such a great idea because of it's susceptibility to burn-in. There are LCD TVs on the market now with fast response time, and one could get a model with response time of 5ms or lower. You just have to keep in mind that if crisp picture is important for you, a low response time (high refresh rate) is a feature you should be looking for.
  8. Screen Size : If you like a large flat panel, Plasma TV offers a slight price advantage over LCD TVs. Also, presently there are no Plasma TVs in the market below 42 inches, but it is likely that we will soon see Plasma TVs with 32 inch screen size. So basically if you want a small HDTV your only option is an LCD TV.
  9. Viewing Angle : On the basis of viewing angles, Plasma TV offers a clear-cut advantage over LCD TV by offering a number of comfortable angles for watching Television.
  10. Screen Resolution :Both Plasma as well as LCD televisions offer high definition television sets with dependable screen resolution. When it comes to comparison, LCD TVs are; however, better than Plasma TVs in screen resolution.
  11. Energy Consumption : LCD TVs consume less power as compared to Plasma TVs and thus, have less possibility of getting heat up in short period of time. Thus, Plasma TVs get heated up in less time and require fans to cool down.
  12. Price / Cost Variation :Plasma TVs are expensive than LCD TVs when we talk about large size television sets, whereas for medium size and small size televisions, LCD TVs are available at lower prices than Plasma TVs.
