I just thought it was all just a matter of my fingers being way to short and clumsy to play anything well. When I tried to play chords that involved using more than three fingers, I could not get the chord to sound clearly. And don't even get me started on how hard it was to change chords, and if a song involved anything above the 5th fret, I could just forget about it altogether.

So there my guitar would sit, leaning against the wall for weeks at a time, while I grew more and more discouraged. I really wanted to learn to play well, but every time I tried, I just became more frustrated.

Not casting any aspersions here, but If you are like me, you think that maybe your local guitar guru can show you how to improve your playing, but are they teaching you basic techniques that will make your playing get much better?

What I usually came across were uniquely talented guitarist who played really well, could show you an awful lot of scales and such, but they could never really explain the "how" of what they were doing. This is where the disconnect was happening. I knew chords and a few scales, but I did not know how to make my fingers do what I wanted to in order to play them right.

I subscribed to several of the popular magazines that had guitar lessons, but did they help?

Another place that I looked for help with my guitar playing was from many of the magazines that had lessons and song music in them. Although they were really good reading, they still left me to piece information together bit by bit and then try to put it all together myself.
