Learn to Play Guitar it's Fun, Easy, & Rewarding!

Learning to play the guitar is not as dificult as you might think. With a little bit of time and effort, you can reap the rewards of learning to play one of the most popular instruments in the western world. I decided to put this page together because of the whole "Guitar Hero" craze. I have so many people telling me I'd love it and I should give it a try...well, the time the spend screwin' around with "Guitar Hero" would be better spent learning to strum a few chords on a real guitar! A whole lot more rewarding too!

So, turn off your TV and get yourself a cheap guitar...and lets get to it!

First Things First

Tuning up and Getting Started

After buying or borrowing a cheap guitar, the next thing you'll want to get is some kind of electronic guitar tuner. This shouldn't set you back anymore than 20 bucks, but I'm sure you can find one a lot cheaper.

The strings on the guitar are identified like this:

The skinny string is the highest note, and also referred to as the first string.
This string is tuned to E

The next string, referred to as the second string...
...is tuned to B

The third string gets tuned to G.

The fourth string is tuned to D.

The fifth string will be tuned to A

Last but not least, the fatest and lowest sounding string is tuned to E.

So, from low to high: E A D G B E

This is what we call standard tuning.

Now lets go look for something cool to learn to play!

The first thing you want to do is learn some basic chords.

If you want to play rock music, power chords are a good thing to learn first. I've got a lesson that teaches basic power chords and has diagrams you can download that show you where to put your fingers. You can get it here: http://pentatonic-minor.blogspot.com/2008/12/learn-power-chords.html

Once you get power chords down, you can start trying to play many popular rock songs. The web is loaded with the chord changes of all kinds of popular music. Happy hunting!
