Is the Playstation SCPH1001 Model the right CD Stereo Componet For You?

I am definitely not an expert, but it seems that there is some real buzz out there regarding the Playstation SCPH 1001 model.  The buzz isn't coming from gamers, but it is coming from audiophiles.  Everyone knows the PSX system was great in its heyday and it was good for playing CD's, but no one would have thought that people would be using it as a stereo component 15 years later.

Don't waste your time with the people that are asking thousands of dollars for their systems, as you can see there are plenty of these systems to be had at a reasonable price.

All of the auctions listed here update every hour and are at prices below $300.

An Audiophile's Dream?

So it's definitely not the fact that this system is state of the art anymore, but it appears that this system has seen a second coming as a great stereo component due to the fact that it has RCA outputs on the back. When you leave it on for three days and then use it, the sound is supposed to match that of a $6000 stereo component.

Soon, I'm going to have my husband check this theory out; I'm not an audiophile, but he is. He'll be able to give some more insight to this theory. Of course, the danger with this is that I might lose the system in the abyss of his workshop in the garage.

My husband still hasn't been able to check this out. I guess I'll have to keep nagging him.

You can read all about it at the blog that started it all: Destructoid.

Since my husband was too lazy to do this form me and I don't know a lot about audio I went out and found a full blown review for your reading pleasure. Check out this Audio Review at 6moons.com.

You Tube videos about the SCPH 1001.

Don't believe what they guys in video 2 are saying about these systems selling for thousands of dollars on eBay. The only people buying the expensive systems are those people that don't intend to pay.

I didn't look at all of the listings at Amazon, but judging from the blurbs you will have to ask the seller if what they are selling is the SCPH 1001 model.

Sony Playstation System

Amazon Price: (as of 07/10/2009) Buy Now

These people are just crazy

If you really think you're going to get $6000 for your SCPH 1001, think again. The only listings ending that high are are the "Buy It Now" listings and the people buying these items are not intending on paying. You'll just waste your time and money trying to get thousands of dollars for your system on eBay.

It looks like many people have given up on trying to get 1,000's for their system. I'll be leaving this feed live just out of curiosity though.

Please be aware that the unit requires substantial ventilation, else it overheats and becomes a useless piece of Nippon plastic.

Hi, Well I have just managed to find a VGC PS1, Cost $0, Second hand dealer had so many he let me take one for free. (Good sales man as I will go back).
Yes it is a good cd player (not sure about V/G). But It has the potentual to be much, much more with a few mod's. search DIYAUDIO. However there are a few standard yardstick Audiophile reasons why this is :
a) Study Plastic Case, metal and quality signal retreival do not go hand in hand.
B) Good (not great) CD trans, However mounting is tweeked by Sony to allow some toughnessto the design. So trans is ineffect floating. Removes signal killing/muddling vibration Great.
C)Good interior layout, Ive just opended mine up to tweek upgrade.
D) I assume that Sony PS1 design engineers did not talk to the Hi-Fi guy's. As they break several "hi-Fi rules" and come up trumps.
I will let you Know more when I finish the mod's.
Cheers
