The Pleiades (PLEE-uh-deez)is located in the constellation Taurus and as the brightest open cluster in the nighsky can be easily viewed with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. It is often designated M45 on star maps and charts. It is located to the left of Orions Belt (termed the "pan handle" in Australia). You will find Orions belt designated on most starmaps.

The Pleiades is best viewed in winter(november to April) for the Northern hemisphere and in summmer (September to April) for the southern hemisphere.

You may notice that the Pleiades is shaped like a tiny dipper. But remember that the Pleiades is a cluster and not a constellation. The stars in the Pleiades were formed in a single cloud of gas and dust. They are crowded together because they were born together. Most people can count five or six stars within the cluster. (Use the photo to identify each member.) Four bright stars--Maia, Electra, Merope, and Alcyone--make up the "bowl" of the dipper. If the sky is dark enough, you may be able to see these stars and several others without much trouble. How many can you count? Perhaps the most famous and inspirational star cluster in the sky, the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and closest open clusters.

The cluster is dominated by beautiful, luminous, hot blue stars which have formed within the last 100 million years.

There are in fact 9 bright stars that can be easily viewed - and are named after the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygete, Celaeno and Alcyone, along with their parents Atlas and Pleione.

The English name of the cluster is of Greek origin but of uncertain meaning. Potentially - plein, to sail, making the Pleiades the "sailing ones"; from pleos, full or many; or from peleiades, flock of doves.

They are known as Matariki in New Zealand Maori, and as Subaru in Japan - The badge of Subaru cars features the Pleiades. Both the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Mayan Temple of the Sun in Cuzco are intimately aligned with the Pleiades.

The Pleiades' high visibility in the night sky has guaranteed it a special place across many cultures, both ancient and modern. As young stars they are often associated with the young women or maidens.
The influence is often portrayed as sweet and feminine.

In Greek mythology, they represented the Seven Sisters, while to the Vikings, they were Freyja's hens, and their name in many old European languages compares them to a hen with chicks.

The Lakota Tribe of North America who have a legend that linked the origin of the Pleiades to Devils Tower.

To the Mayans the Pleiades were associated with abundance, because they return to the Southern Hemisphere sky each year at harvest-time.

In ancient Eygpt they were the Seven Faces that foretold the destiny of each child.

To Aboriginal people in Australia they were part of the same "mob", part of the same "country" and as young women descended to Earth to play roles in story and myth.

The gentle glow of the Pleiades have also inspired and guided sailors over the Seven Seas - creating an orientation both of time and space to mark both location and the passage of time throughout the night.

About 20 million years ago a meterorite shower fell in the Moldau Valley of Czechoslovakia. The result of this shower was moldavite, a rare crystal of a bottle-green, translucent hue.

Although some people believe that it is a true meteorite (formed in outer space), it is more generally believed that it originates from rock that was struck by a meteorite and melted. According to the latter belief, moldavite combines extraterrestrial and terrestrial properties.

It is generally considered to be one of the stones very important for this particular phase of human evolution. Many people feel that at this time there are countless souls who are not originally from Planet Earth, but from the Pleiades, Sirius, Orion, and other systems.

When placed on the third eye, moldavite helps us to establish the cosmic connection. When placed on the heart it teaches us to appreciate the gift of being here on Earth.

On a more practical level, many people have reported that moldavite helps to release all that is no longer needed for personal growth: old ideas: leftover emotional/mental habits, whatever you know on a deep level needs to go.

I have been wearing a Moldavite pendant for ten years. I feel a great affinity with it. My immediate experience is that it greatly expands my aura and that it has an unlifting and energising quality. It has been a key part of my opening to a wider cosmic view of reality - I believe we need to understand our location within the galaxy and ground this understanding in our awareness.
