Point Reyes National Seashore, A Favorite Power-Place

Point Reyes National Seashore is part of the U.S. National Park Service, located about 50 miles north of San Francisco in scenic Marin County, northern California.

Growing up, I spent hours hiking the long stretches of white, windblown sand, listening to the deep earthy, watery rumble of breaking waves, keeping my feet wet in the chill, foaming, hissing surf. On the Drakes Beach side of the peninsula I would go in deeper, diving under breakers.

I made the acquaintance of more seagulls, pelicans, and seals on every visit. I found many pieces of natural art: sculpted, weathered driftwood, partially polished stones (some semi-precious), and (mostly broken) sand-dollars and spiral shells.

At least once a year I would stroll far enough along one of the 10 to 14 mile stretches of beach to end up where the sands were thinning down to impassible, partially submerged rocks. With a giant ocean in front of me and a tall bluff behind I would snap into awareness that the incoming high tide was about to cut me off! Then I would thrill to race it back to higher, wider ground.

Lunch With Drakes Beach Seagulls

A favorite fun activity of mine at Point Reyes National Seashore

Lunch With Drakes Beach Gulls

At Drakes Beach on Point Reyes National Seashore you can swim -- if you enjoy being refreshed by CHILLING waves!

Or you can sit or lay back on the beach and share your picnic with the friendly, bold seagulls -- because they will snatch some anyway.

Waves Crashing On Beautiful Desolation Thrill & Relax Me

Pacific Waves and Playful Gulls, Point Reyes National Seashore, October 2007

Even in summer, my feet go numb when I walk the beach through the wavy edge of the rumbling 50-50F surf.

Usually, I find amazing driftwood sculptures or broken shells pouring out creative visions. And the seagulls are fun company, all the way!
