What's the progression from beginning to end, when you're working in the studio?
Brett: For us going in, we were friends. We all grew up on the East Coast together. And going in for us and making music - the ultimate thing is coming in with songs and ideas, partying a bit, hanging out. Then you go in there and you write great stuff - things that mean something to your soul, something to your heart, something that can be from anger or be from love. Then after you have that you go into the studio and you take it in there, and try to make the best music you can.

When you see the wild stuff in this movie, will you say to each other "We can top that?"

Rikki: Probably. Maybe this is about the time I should push my book (laughing).

Singer, songwriter, producer, director, actor - diabetes may have caused a few hiccups along the road of life but it has not stopped Bret Michaels from becoming one of the most recognized names in American rock.

As front man for the legendary rock band Poison, Michaels has sold 25 million records and scored 15 chartbusting Top 40 singles including "Talk Dirty to Me," "Something to Believe In," "Nothing But a Good Time" and the timeless #1 smash "Every Rose Has its Thorn." And in the new millennium Poison's music has been featured in such big screen flicks as "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Grandma's Boy" and "Deuce Bigelow-European Gigolo." They continue to be one of the industry's top grossing concert attractions.

Diagnosed at the age of 6, Bret Michaels has been living the diabetes lifestyle for decades and has seen advancements being made in the management of diabetes. Citing the incongruity of the rock star lifestyle and the diabetes lifestyle, balance was the key to maintaining his diabetes life and his life on and off the stage. It was a show at Madison Square Garden shortly after the release of the group's first album that led Michaels to come out to the diabetes community about his disease. A common flu combined with an insulin shot and a missed meal led to his passing out at the show. It was misinterpreted by the media as a drug stupor. For the sake of his fans, he shared his lifelong struggle.

Michaels has produced and written material for other artists including Stevie Nicks. He wrote and produced the song "Love's a Hard Game to Play" which appeared on Nicks' platinum album "Timespace: The Best Of Stevie Nicks." More recently Michaels could be heard providing background vocals along with Phil Vassar on the Kenny Chesney/Uncle Kracker duet single "Last Night Again."

In the mid-90s Michaels formed a film production company with actor Charlie Sheen. The partnership ultimately led to Michaels writing, directing and starring in several films including "A Letter From Death Row" which he executive co-produced with Sheen.

As an actor, Michaels has made regular appearances on such hit television shows as "Yes Dear," "Martial Law," and "The Chris Isaak Show." And he has also co-hosted "Access Hollywood" and been a judge on the wildly popular "Nashville Star" program.

Setting his musical sights beyond Poison, Michaels released his debut solo album "Songs of Life" in 2003 followed by the rootsy, Americana flavored sophomore record "Freedom of Sound" in 2005.

Poison's lead vocalist, Bret Michaels, has few peers when it comes to getting wild. But Michaels is actually a model of responsibility when it comes to keeping his diabetes under control.

"Everyday is an absolute battle," says the 39-year-old Michaels. "I don't care what anyone says. You have to wake up and say to yourself, 'I accept that I have diabetes, and I'm not going to let it run my entire life.' It's a fine line, a Catch-22, a balancing act. I work to enjoy my life like a regular human being and at the same time keep my blood sugar levels as decent as possible."
"I was 6 years old when I was diagnosed with diabetes," recalls Michaels. "I remember I was in between kindergarten and first grade. I'll never forget how extremely sick and dehydrated I was. Everything I drank or ate immediately came out of me."
"My stomach was bloated and I was literally drinking almost a gallon of water at a time," recalls Michaels. "Because my parents didn't know what diabetes was, they were giving me Cokes to drink, which was not only dehydrating me more, but making my blood sugar go up twice as much."

Unless treated properly, DKA can lead to a diabetic coma or even death.

"At about 2 or 3 in the morning, my mom and dad took me to the Harrisburg hospital," says Michaels. "In the emergency room, the doctors knew what the problem was right off the bat."

"I spent close to almost two full months in the hospital trying to figure out my blood sugar levels, what kind of insulin to give me," adds Michaels. "It was a very scary experience, more for my parents than for me. I was just a little hellion excited to play with the toys."
Doctors recommend that diabetics check their blood sugar often throughout the day, maintain a proper diabetic diet, and use exercise to help keep the insulin at a steady level.

"For me, being on the road with Poison for months on end can mess with my routine," says Michaels. "I test my blood sugar about six to eight times a day and eat smaller meals all day long to keep my blood sugar even."

"One huge blessing I've had is being able to get up and find a way to exercise," adds the rock star. "I either lift weights, run, or just do 100 push-ups before I go on stage. Any which way I can to keep my blood sugar levels down without pumping too much of the insulin into me."

Diabetes can also cause blindness.

"I get my eyes checked constantly," says Michaels. "So far, I have had a few vessels in my eyes burst, but they've healed themselves."

The high and low blood sugar levels can also affect a diabetic's emotional life.

"Sometimes the swings in the blood sugar level play havoc with your emotions and vice versa," says Michaels. "I have a lot to do with our band, and that brings a high stress level which can make my diabetes go out of control. As I go along I'm learning to better deal with my emotions."

In the world of diabetes, research continues to find ways to help the body produce its own insulin.
After touring with Hollyweird, Michaels is releasing Songs of Life, a new solo record.

"I think it's the best song writing I have ever done," says the singer-songwriter.

And to those who also suffer from diabetes, he urges, "Accept that you have the disease. Keep taking your insulin. Keep it under control. Also, enjoy your life. I have stayed in good physical shape by having mind, matter, and music over the disease."

About the Band

Poison is an American rock band who acheieved the height of their fame in the 80's and early 90's. Their music is characterised by catchy guitar riffs, and straight forward melodies, heavily influences by the likes of Kiss, Boston, and the New York Dolls. The band, are considered the epitome of the glam metal scene, and were well known for their feminine makeup, overblown hair and energetic stageshows.
The band debuted with look what the cat dragged in, which produced one of their biggest hits talk dirty to me, and sold over 2 million records.
But it would be their album open up and say ahhhh, which would sell them to the world. it produced their biggest hit every rose has it's thorn, as well as look but can't touch and fallen angel. The album sold 8 million copies, and the cover was banned in many countries, as it depicted a demon style female with a rather long tongue.
Their next album, flesh and blood, saw the band take a new direction, while staying in the same mold. It also saw them become huge superstars in their own right, therfore stamping their place in rock history.

CC Deville was fired from the band in 1991, and replaced Richie Kotzen, before he too was replaced by Blues Saraceno, after only one album. Eventually, Michaels and CC patched up their differences and the original band members were together again.

They are currently working on a new studio album, titled poison'd, which will see them cover other artists. According to Rikki Rockett, the song will be ones fans will not expect of the band. It is slated for a 2007 release. Bret Michaels is also working on another solo album."I would play music whether I made it or not," Michaels told a journalist in 2002 and it's that commitment to his art that continues to keep him at the forefront of the entertainment industry.

Bret Michaels is, if nothing else, a true survivor. He has survived a life long battle as an insulin dependent diabetic, a well publicized near fatal car

crash in 1994 and the countless musical trends and fads of the last two decades.

"As soon as I ever start to just go through the motions I'll quit," confessed the 44 year old singer, songwriter, producer, director and actor in a recent

interview. But there's little chance he'll even slow down let alone quit anytime soon. In fact, after more than 20 years in the business this award winning,

multi platinum superstar's career continues to move at warp speed.

This is a lot of Poison! Nice job putting this all together. So, I was so-so into Poison back when I listened to that genre of music a lot, in the early 90s. But I actually like their music a lot more now. I don't know if it's because of the nostalgia "thing" or because I've become more of a fan of the older, wiser Brett Michaels.

I saw Bret Michaels in concert on St. Patty's Day in Chicago and it was AMAZING!!! Nothing like a few green beers and great music. Found some links that have great pics and videos from the concert and wanted to share!

Early Years:
Though glam-influenced hair metal group Poison formed initially as Paris in the area around suburban Harrisburg, Pennysylvania, Michaels, Dall, Rockett and original guitarist Matt Smith soon decided to pursue their dreams of rock and roll stardom (where else?) in the more appropriate showbiz climate of Los Angeles. After the quartet relocated to the West Coast in 1985, Smith left the band and was replaced by DeVille. With its lineup intact, the group began to hone its sound in Sunset Strip clubs, exhibiting a full-tilt glam image through makeup and costumes that often overshadowed its music.
Debut Album & Instant Stardom:
After signing to Enigma records in 1986, Poison issued its debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, to relatively little fanfare. What got record buyers' attention initially was the album's cover, which featured unabashedly feminized portraits of each band member, a glammed-up image far more excessive than any preceding pop metal band. Still, as it built slowly into 1987, the album's music began to gain steam, as "I Want Action," "I Won't Forget You," and, especially, "Talk Dirty to Me" became substantial hit singles. Eventually the record would go on to sell more than 2 million copies within a year's time.
Poison Avoids the Sophomore Slump:
If Look What the Cat Dragged In was a monumental success for a debut release, Poison's 1988 follow-up, Open Up and Say Ahh!, successfully raised the bar and made the band one of the world's biggest rock bands of the time. Musically, the record continued the band's straightforward formula of big guitars and party anthems but also injected a mild measure of variety in the serious rocker "Fallen Angel" and the hugely popular ballad "Every Rose Has its Thorn." By late 1988, Poison had staked a genuine claim to a status as one of hard rock's biggest live acts and hair metal's most serious chart threats.
One Last Success Before Grunge Sounded the Death Knell:
Poison didn't skip a beat for its third release, Flesh & Blood, issued with consistency after another two-year period. Tracks like the appallingly bad "Unskinny Bop," the vapid "Something to Believe In," and the similarly limited "Ride the Wind" may have indicated musical decline for the band, but that didn't stop such hits from making the record another bona fide smash. Even so, the band began its implosion even before Nirvana broke, as DeVille's increasing substance abuse problems affected his performance enough at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards that he and Michaels engaged in a fistfight backstage.
Somehow this Poison Stays in the System a Long Time:
Despite the subsequent firing of DeVille and a new album in 1993 without him that was pretty much ignored in a changing rock music landscape, the original lineup of Poison managed to stage a reunion by the end of the '90s. Since 1999, the original lineup has more or less stayed together, mounting largely successful summer nostalgia tours into the new millennium. Along the way, the group has kept things interesting; even as DeVille found sobriety, a dispute between Michaels and Dall erupted onstage in Atlanta in 2006.
