Welcome to my World of Pokemon!
However, I am not currently looking to *create* the Pokemon MMORPG I describe here. Rather, I am, through description, trying to portray a mental picture of how a great Pokemon MMORPG would work.
Were this description to ever come true, and a Pokemon MMORPG to be made in this description, whether by my hands or by another's, I would be ecstatic--however that is not my main goal here.
Yet.
The World
The place where this MMO would be set

If it's not painfully obvious, the Pokemon MMO world would include all previous generation's regions (Kanto, Johto, etc) as well as new regions, all interconnected as a huge world for one to explore. Perhaps it would even include spin-off regions such as the Orre region either as extra areas or as cannon areas of the MMO.
The old regions need GOOD up-grades of the music that was played that doesn't take away from the original feel, but instead brings out that flavor more.
New areas would need similar-styled music.
The world would be a 3D world, in and out of battles.
The world would be just as colorful and vibrant as in the previous games, if not more so.
There wouldn't be just one quest to go on like in the previous games. Instead, just like in WoW and other MMO's, you'd be able to choose different quests, have many different adventures, and always keep playing, always with new content.
In almost all other aspects, the world should act just as it does in the previous games (picking and choosing the best over the worst, of course; weather and times of the day--VERY YES. Actively showing the sun, day/night/etc; possibly even the moon to portray visible nights and pitch-black nights in the wilderness.)
1st Amendment:
This world will not reference or be a game version of the Pokemon *Anime*. This is because the Anime has a lot of inaccuracies when compared to the video games.
The MMO should take its cues visually and behaviorally from the video games. How about, like the Pokemon Gold game says, have Staryu float to the surface of the sea during night and glow?
The Players
The actual people playing the game

First of all, of course, is player customization. Lots of basic Pokemon trainer-styled clothing that when mix-and-matched, gives everyone a unique look.
Also customizing gender, ethnicity, hair color, etc. and all other human traits.
It's possible for there to be a choice between being a trainer, team rocket member, or some other active member of the world (non-NPC).
Trainers would start off in a starter area, being given hints by the NPCs who abound.
As you progress through the areas of the game, you get to fight as many people as you want. For fairness and equality purposes, the computer will notify any two people if the average levels of their Pokemon are 10+ levels above or below the person they want to fight, or if any one Pokemon is 10+ levels above your highest leveled Pokemon.
Once the trainers fight the biggest foe of the game, a lot more options are open to them. They may now become gym leaders. They are now free to explore the world and complete quests.
Perhaps they are excluded to a starter region before getting to explore the earlier Pokemon regions.
1st Amendment:
Something that came to mind as I was playing the games was the item holding system, the bag in which all items are held. In the 2nd generation, the bag is very small, and although it is eons beyond what the 1st generation had, it still had a lot to go.
By the 4th generation, the space has expanded dramatically, but nothing much has happened in the terms of sorting your items.
I'd like for the pokemon MMO to be able to instantly call up, say, all items that cure freezing at once. The 4th generation actually does a good job of something similar to this, but only in-battle, whereas while just walking around, your items are in long lists of unorganized messes.
All in short, the system for your player to hold items needs to be improved.
Also, when in the starting area, you are either able to choose or are given randomly your rival. He or she will speak your language so as to be able to throw insults back and forth.
If one of you has a 10-lvl difference, or if one of you decides they don't want to be a rival anymore, then we go into the mode of switching rivals. Once this happens, the obvious "winner" will be branded as so, and new, equal-playing field rivals may be assigned.
The Pokemon
Those guys you catch and battle with

It's very obvious the Pokemon need to be in as much 3D as the world is. Pokemon Stadium 64/Pokemon Snap style 3D is at least what is needed.
Also, just like in Pokemon Stadium, when attacking and being hit, the Pokemon need to have good animations for their specific bodies and layout. A Caterpie shouldn't just have the same animation as Onix just because they are both long Pokemon with no legs.
All the attacks a Pokemon could know need to be covered by the animations. A Snorlax doesn't need a fly animation, but a Zapdos does.
One or two really well-done menacing poses would be nice for each Pokemon as well. They'd definitely have to fit the Pokemon's body and "personality" as well; you won't find Metapod twirling around and floating in mid-air or hopping towards you to give a menacing glare.
It would be nice to see some maturing of the Pokemon as well. I've heard that in the Harry Potter series, the books grew with the children, so the kids didn't have to ever grow out of the series. Why can't Pokemon be the same? Most of the original Pokemon lovers are now in their early 20's. Let's have Pokemon mature to the same level.
Finally, something to go over is how everyone can catch 'em all when there are only one of some Pokemon. I say this world is set in a time *after* all the Pokemon have been caught, and perhaps the legendaries released again. They would be too powerful to be caught (or some other such excuse) but you'd still be able to experience them in-game in all their glory. If you're lucky.
Also each person gets a pokedex to start off with that has all the pokemon already pre-loaded to it (because all the pokemon have been caught).
The Battles
Pew pew pew

While you're rummaging through tall grass, it would be very nice to see the Pokemon you just encountered jump out at you while not in a cut scene. We can't have the person not even see what he's encountered until the battle starts anymore.
It would also be almost absolutely necessary to see other people battling each other and wild Pokemon as they encounter them in real time.
When a battle starts, a few things need to happen. One, the area can be somehow "warped" so that everyone can fight. It'd be nice to have everything a shade of white, a throwback to the old games' fighting scenes.
Of course as I explained before, the battle animations need to be top-notch, or at least well done. Blastoise needs to use his cannons to shoot water, etc.
Also, for once, we need to see how much damage the enemy Pokemon is taking with each hit, as well as accurate health bars that change color correctly (I'm looking at you, Diamond and Pearl).
Animations also need to be fast and not time-consuming (D/P, lookin' at you.)
Finally, people should be most profitable battle-wise when they battle Pokemon traditionally. Fighting a Zubat over and over again shouldn't give you a better Pokemon than fighting whatever comes in your path.
Miscellaneous
Random stuff

-Items need to have animations of how they're used
-If Pokemon drop things when defeated, they need to be realistic. A Meowth may drop money. A Rattata may drop a tiny trinket.
-Just like in WoW, it would be really nice for yearly celebrations in-game to coincide with IRL celebrations.
-More when I think about it.
-With the storyline, the MMO could build up an epic, amazing world...and then using the evil team, have it demolished--possibly have it taken over, *while the people are there*.
Very similar to in Pokemon Gold, in which Team Rocket takes over the Radio Tower.
("The Storyline" might become its own section)
That's it right now. I'm sure there's a lot that's wrong with my write up. You are MORE than welcome to tell me where I've gone wrong, what I screwed up, what wouldn't work, etc. It'd be nice to see a compliment or two as well.
I'll be looking forward to comments!

DISCLAIMERS!
I'm sorry to disappoint a lot of you, but I personally did NOT draw ANY of the pictures seen above. :( my life's gift is much more in thinking, problem solving, and putting ideas together onto paper/text than it is creating magnificent art. :(
All text IS mine though :)

- I think that, when a Pokemon is learning a new move, you would have to enter a sort of "tutorial mode" in which you would train the Pokemon to use the move.
This would simulate the actual "training" that a true trainer would have to go through. Also, it would be a great way to get the player to get familiar with using it.
Also, with choosing character, I think that you should be able to choose (much like Wizards, Elves, etc.) whether you'd like to be a Trainer, Breeder, Collector or Pokemaniac, Researcher, Ranger, etc.
Pokemon Centers should be an interactive place where there is no battling. It can be a sort of meeting place or chat room for players.
The most advanced Nintendo platform is, I believe, the Wii. That's where I see this game happening.
Even if it wasn't a multi-player online game, I would still be HAPPY to be given the opportunity to just play the older versions on Wii (with these updates in graphics, storyline, etc).
I have been thinking about this RPG for at least 10 years. I'm 20 now, so you can imagine what someone's life is like waiting for this. Pokemon Snap is, I think, the closest we've gotten to this style of game.
I want to customize and control every aspect of my Pokemon experience.
I want to BE a Pokemon Master ...

- Being an older teenage who is approaching his twenties, I have hoped and dreamed for an MMO much like what you have described. As someone stated previous, I think it's becoming more and more possible to produce such complex animations with variety as you have described. There ARE currently some games mimicing the style of pokemon in an MMO genre (Imagine, Nanovor, ect.) but they all end up falling short due to lack of popularity/advertising.
Appealing to older teens/young adults I believe would be the right move if there was to be such a project, because the sheer popularity of pokemon would absorb many age groups on either end of that scale.
If there was to be a pokemon MMO in the near future, I can only hope it is done similarly to the way you have described, because even if it were to come in the next two or three years, I'd throw money at Nintendo as soon as the pre-order became available.
Very good segment you wrote, we can only hope something is done about it.

- If my vision of a Pokemon MMO were to come true, yes, you would definitely be able to play as a girl. Since Crystal, you've been able to, so why stop now? :)
Plus, you should be able to customize everything about your character, down to the hair style and color, etc.

- I'm sorry to hear you don't like the way I laid it out D: All I'm trying to do is stay true to the spirit of pokemon.
And oops! I think you guys think I drew these images...I'm sorry! I didn't! I image.google.com'd all of them...*is quickly putting up disclaimers about how he DID NOT draw these ><*
P.S. i don't like the idea of clothing giving different stats for pokemon that wear them. That's my thing, I guess, but I just don't like it.
If it were items that they could hold, kind of like how they are doing in the games already, I'd be much more fine with it.

- I agree with you, no clothes for pokemon plz.
But perhaps the items they hold could be rare drops that increase the the effect of skills, whether it be increasing the area range of thunder, or making pikachu's swift attack make him move 20% faster. Would give a nice feel of differentiation to trainers with the same pokemon and would give a chance for the pokemon we adore most a chance in combat even if they didn't have the greatest stats.

- So many animations, I know! @_@ It'd so be worth it though.
But with technology doubling every two years, and pokemon only doubling much longer than that, we should have a crossover where it'd become easier and easier to make animations for all the pokemon and store them, even as more come out.
